I don't know what to do with this room, please help!
I am not sure what kind of furniture would work best in here.
Off this room is my livingroom.
Should I put a piece under the window? a chair and table in the corner?
The room is pretty big. It's about 14 X1.
We are getting a new livingroom set that will not stick out into this room. Image Attachment(s):

Are you using the dining room as the living room now. And is this the original living room? Where is the kitchen?
Just trying to figure out the layout.

Re: I don't know what to do with this room, please help!
The kitchen is thru the other doorway ( to the left of the front door when walking in)
Our dinning room is off the kitchen on the other side of the house. Basically the kitchen and dinning room are a mirror of these two rooms put together.
We have a cape. The previous owners opened the two downstairs bedrooms. One is my living room and one is the dinning room.

I would set it up as another conversation area around the FP. An area rug and two arm chairs angled towards each other facing the FP.
Maybe a console table under the stairs and a bookcase under the window-- easy access to pick up a book and read in front of the FP!

OK...since you already have a dining room, I would do what Randella posted.

Or maybe even open that wall up completely and make it one big living area.

If at all possible, take down the archway between those two rooms and combine them into one bigger living room. Then you've got a nice gathering area in front of your fireplace for when guests are over where you could have a couch or several chairs, and then another area in the original LR for more informal lounging or tv watching
the light is nice in there, i'd take advantage of that with plants too

I'm thinking that this should be the living room (more formal) and the other room is a family room. Does the kitchen look into the back room?
Kind of odd that they are next to each other. I would take down the wall if I could

Re: I don't know what to do with this room, please help!
the other side of the house (kitchen and dinning room) are not connected to the livingroom. There is a wall up.
I would love to take the wall down but my livingroom now is smaller than the other room so to remove the wall my living room will be "L" shaped.
On the other side of my livingroom wall is the bathroom and a closet.
I was thinking of putting the wall back up. Making the entrance from dinning room side and making the front room the living room but I like having the extra space when you come in the front door.

I would open up the space between the two rooms as much as possible and treat the space as one room. The front room would be slightly more formal but coordinate with the back room and have a nice cozyconversation area around the fireplace. Maybe a setee sofa under the window and two nice comfy chairs facing the fireplace. Even with an L shape the rooms will work together for entertaining.

Do you have kids??? I would make the front room a living room and the other room more of a den/playroom if you have kids.

I am sure they changed the layout over time. Your DR was probably a bedroom and the room with the fireplace was probably the original LR.
I would do a satee or 2 club chairs with a small table between them facing the fireplace.
You could also make it an office/library with a nice desk in the middle of the room and some nice bookcases on each side of the fireplace.

Exactly what I was thinking. Especially because that is the current set up in my house. With a different fireplace, that could be a photo of my place. Just wish I could knock down that wall and make it one big room (which is how I envision doing yours). My problem would be finding myself another bedroom!

i'd like to see it switched around. empty room as living room (fireplace) and the other room as the dining room.
I like the architecture of that archway, i'd leave that.

I would make the room with the fireplace the formal LR, the current LR a DR, and whatever you use now for a DR a family/hang out room.

I like the idea that Randella posted and choose furnishings on a small scale as to not make the room feel overcrowded with furniture. The idea of combining the two rooms is a good one too but it's hard to see how big your current LR is. ETA>> I think it's nice to have a small entryway before going into the actual living space.

I'd move your couch and stuff to the front room, it looks more like a LR with the fireplace and make the room off the kitchen a den or reading room.
