Replace carpeting in unused rooms?
DH and I have 3 bedrooms in a part of the house we likely won't be using for a while. All of these rooms are carpeted, but I'm totally skeeved by someone else's old carpeting.
There is no usable subflooring underneath. Would you replace the carpeting? Or suck it up until the rooms are needed and then make changes? Maybe have them professionally cleaned?

I would leave them until you plan on using them. When that time comes around, you may change your mind about what you want to use the room for, and therefore will want a particular type of flooring.

Re: Replace carpeting in unused rooms?
if you can get by on just cleaning them i would do that. You can rent the machines to wash them and it would be cheaper than hiring people. In our house the carpets couldn't even be saved with a cleaning they were so gross, so we replaced them right away.

If they aren't that terrible than I would just have them professionally cleaned.

we have the same situation with the entire upstairs of the house - but the carpeting is only a couple of years old and no one lived up there with the prev owner either. i'd say have it cleaned and leave it. you don't know what you'll want to decorate it like until you are ready to use it.

Re: Replace carpeting in unused rooms?
When we bought, the upstairs rooms were carpeted with nasty, dusty, probably 30+ yr old shag carpeting. We tore it up and replaced it with a neutral berber carpet (it was so old the padding turned to dust underneath) We couldnt keep it, it was nasty!!
I think it really depends on how bad the carpets are. Can they be cleaned? Are they dusty causing asthma issues etc?
Could you rip it up and buy a cheap area rug from Home Depot?
