Bordering fence
A section of our backyard fence blew down and DH is now in the process of installing a new one.
I was thinking about going to the neighbor whos property borders ours (he will see the fence) and ask him if he is willing to go half on it. Am I out of line?
The materials and stuff are already paid for. We are not banking on the $$. It's just the point. When we put up the fence on the other side both neighbors offered to chip in, this one nothing.
Isn't it the neighborly thing to do?
ETA: I think part of the reason the fence blew down was bc his tree was pushing the fence forward causing the posts to become wobbly. DH mentioned it to him and offered to remove the tree for him but he did it himself but left the stump.

Re: Bordering fence
I wouldn't ask...I'd never even heard of asking before I came to LIF. If it were my fence that fell down, I would just pay for it. Sorry, but IMO if it's yours, you should just pay for it. It's just a part of home-ownership...

Re: Bordering fence
I think the most you can do is mention to them that you are replacing the fence because the tree caused it to blow down.... if they offer to give to money great, if not, then you really can't expect/ask for it.

Re: Bordering fence
it sucks, but you're on your own... we replaced a fence and the cost was on us, but you can't expect your neighbor to chip in..

Re: Bordering fence
I would never. Even if he benefits, if you want the fence, it's your $$$ that should pay for it. We have had a few threads on this the last few days.

Yes, out of line. It is YOUR fence, YOUR responsibility to fix.

Re: Bordering fence
Not meaning to be offensive, but I think it's rude to ask a neighbor to pay for your fence. If it's something that came up in coversation that's different, but to just outright ask I think is tacky.

i agree. don't ask them to pay for your fence even though they indirectly benefit from it.
