Blood draw at one year
Did they take blood from your child's arm at one year to test for thyroid function and cholesterol? They convinced me to do this, and I'm sure it was a mistake. My son was purple from screaming. His arms are so small, how could they find the vein? Why not just a finger prick? Did anyone else have blood taken from the arm at the one
year appointment?

Yes, it's standard procedure to have blood drawn from the arm at the 1 year well visit (or just prior to it). I don't recall cholesterol and thyroid tests being done, but I know there were several tests done (including lead testing), which is why they need more than just a finger prick of blood. It's definitely no fun- we can all relate!!

They did d the lead test.....with a finger prick.....and then the arm after for all these other things....I'm sure this was a mistake! Anyone else?

The took blood from their finger. One prick for blood and then a little squeezed into a vial to be sent out for testing. Nothing from their arms.

yes, we had bloodwork done at 1 year (and 2 years I think).
Did you go somewhere where they are used to kids? I have always taken DS to LabCorps in Sayville and they have been great.

Yes - DH took DD to that appt - they said it was standard. He was traumatized. they couldnt find her vein and she screamed like crazy.

finger prick, they tested for all kind of things at the office, I'm not even sure what I was so freaked out, DS got over it pretty quick, I was traumatized.
He was more upset about the bandage being stuck on his finger than anything else afterward.

They took a half a vial of blood from just a finger prick. It was a horrible experience. DS went ballistic. It took 4 nurses to get it. I asked if it would have been better to just do it in the arm. They said that they didn't like to do it that way...It was so traumatic for me and DS. Took over 10 minutes to get the blood...

I meant they needed more than a finger prick because it was several different tests, not just one.

Took DS 3 years ago and I do remember they took blood from his arm for lead.
They couldn't find his vein.
It was traumatizing! Broke my heart!
I use LabCorps in Commack and what I did with DD was, made the appointment online, told them straight up..."I am coming in with a BABY! I'd love someone experienced with babies". They listened! DDs experience was better!

With both DC they only did the finger prick & they didn't test cholesterol or thyroid.

I'm just trying to understand, they came back to me in 20 minutes with a few different reports. I remember iron, lead, white blood cells, it seamed like a bunch of different tests. I remember only one vial.

DS had blood from the arm at 12 months, for anemia and lead. It depends on the ped, whether they require the arm or finger prick. My nephew is the same age, and he just had the finger.
My ped said the finger prick can take longer, and therefore hurt more, and they couldn't get a good enough result from the finger. I didnt want DS having the arm, so I asked for the finger, and they wouldn't do it..lol. Once the arm was over, it was fine, DS took it better than I do!

Yes, we went to a lab to have ds' blood drawn but I dont think it was thyroid...it was for lead. It was a horrible experience. I do not know why some peds require a blood draw vs. a finger prick. I would think if a finger prick is sufficent tha they wouldnt purposely "torture" a 1 year old.

DS only had the finger prick but it was very traumatic. The girl needed to fill a vial (or more, I don't even remember) but she squeezed and squeezed and it was horrible!!! Felt like it took HOURS though I'm sure it was just 5-10 minutes. He was in such a fit and we had to hold him there the whole time - I felt like the meanest mommy in the world - I'm pretty sure I was crying . I wondered if from the arm would have been better - but I think either would have been awful for him.

Yes, DD's 1 yr blood work was from the arm. I think it's pretty standard. They are testing for a host of different issues - the most common are lead and anemia.
Personally, I will not get DD's blood drawn anywhere other than the Good Sam hospital lab. I think the hospital labs have the most experience with children and everytime we have gone there has never been an issue. I think her 1 yr blood work we were in & out in under 10 minutes.

ITA! Good Sam was awesome for having blood drawn (unfortunately DS#1 had to go on a number of occasions.) for kids...but it still isn't pleasant

my dds had the finger prick at their 10 month appt, i know they def tested for lead and anemia, and some other things i'm just not sure what, i was crazy one dd screamed like a banshee the other just let them do it but looked so sad the whole time
and i know they dont do arm blood draw becasuse i asked my sil who goes there also and she said they dont do that

The finger prick test for lead is not as accurate as from the arm - that is why many peds will take it from the arm or have you go to a lab. Our ped does a lot of the one year bloodwork with a finger prick but, will not do the lead. He says it is MUCH more accurate from the arm and since they only do it once they want to do it right. I have heard this from a family member that is a ped as well. I do not believe that they test for thyroid or cholest. though. if they do, that is news to me. I thought it was just lead and CBC.
