Re: Honest opinions, when you hear someone says "I bought a house in Baldwin",what do you think?

I just find it annoying if I have to have that same conversation over and over again.
So all the racist & status theories aside, this is what I meant when I replied upthread. If you love the house or area, I don't think you should have to justify where you live by having to tag on about the school district. Purely bc I think it would be so annoying for you as the homeowner.

I teach in Baldwin- at the high school and I think that the administration at the school is very lax in a lot of areas which contribute to the school having a bad reputation. However, I teach AP (advanced placement courses) and have brights, wonderful students in those classes. Baldwin is what you make of it. If the parents are good and involved then the kids reflect that.

as someone who has family living in baldwin and family that works in baldwin school district, i think you made a great choice by getting oceanside schools. baldwin is a nice town but based on my family's personal experience, my kids wouldn't go to baldwin school district
congrats on finding a house!

Re: Honest opinions, when you hear someone says "I bought a house in Baldwin",what do you think?
I live in Baldwin, or what people here like to call " Baldwin Harbor" because I am south of Merrick road and Atlantic Ave. Racial overtones always permeate all discussions of where I live when I talk to random people, it's unavoidable. I live a few blocks away from Baldwin park, some of the homes here are gorgeous and expensive...and yes, the majority of the folks in my immediate area are Caucasian.
DH grew up here which is why we stayed after we got married (his parents live not too far away, just north of Merrick road). We have never had issues with crime. I actually left my car unlocked during the summer when I first started dating DH and nothing ever got stolen. I actually like living here...I just wish there were more diversity and I don't mean more African American neighbors, but folks of Asian descent, Indian, Hispanic, etc...I find that many people categorize the "best" towns in LI based on race alone.

Why not just tell people you live in Oceanside?

To be really honest, I think the fact that you are asking this question might indicate that you would not be fully comfortable buying/living there. If you were really sold on the area, I don't think you would give a hoot about what anyone else thinks.
And I am not criticizing you at all for this post! Just figured I'd add my two cents.
As for the question, I am a Suffolk girl and know nothing about Baldwin.
Good luck

Re: Honest opinions, when you hear someone says "I bought a house in Baldwin",what do you think?
I wouldn't really worry about having to mention the schools all the time. In fact I think it's quite normal to mention the school district if it differs from the town whether or not your trying to upsell your decision. We were looking at houses in RVC and always told people that it was RVC with Oceanside schools. maybe that made it loose its luster to some people but it didn't matter to us it was just a fact. Anyway love that area you are looking at. We are looking there too. Good luck

I love the undertone of racism in this post. Lets be "honest", your issue is that Oceanside HS is 88% white and Baldwin HS is 39% wihite, and you want to let everyone know that you live on the whiter side of town??? ...this is why LI is the 3rd most racially divided areas in the country.
I hate to say it, but I agree with this. Why does it even matter what might be going through people's minds? Who's going to be living there, you or them?
ITA!! Who cares what people think? I hate that Long Island has "bad" towns b/c they're not all white. I want my kids raised w/diversity.

I tend to disagree with this, why?
Because its not about racism...it can be really just about the school disctrict/area.
I work in Seaford, very near to Massapequa and I know cops in area as well as discussion with clients in area....and majortity will tell me how that HS is one infested with drugs!
Not saying that its not in every school but this one is known for it, its out there...A lot and unfortunately has been in media for it. Sadly.
That alone would def make me consider the area for home.
