Look for the post that I have tied my DH to a tree...

We are just getting the ball rolling looking at houses, and while I am up until all sorts of ungodly hours researching schools, comps, houses, taxes, and whatever else all he can talk about is how the minute we close he is going to buy a GERMAN SHEPARD!!! I like dogs I do..but here are ALL the reasons we should NOT be getting a dog.
1. I AM ALLERGIC TO DOGS!!!
2. The extra expense of vet bills, food, vaccinations, toys, beds, and what ever the destroy
3. House breaking is going to be a pain in the @$$!!!
4. DH says he will shoulder the responsibility Chat Icon he is in the military and rarely home for longer than a two week clip, and even then he's away for months on end. So now who is shouldering that?
5.We have 2 young children!!
6. Extra cleaning of PET HAIR, Drool, and what ever else.
7. I AM ALLERGIC TO DOGS!!!

I could go on and on
his cons list is:
1.But Teddy would love a dog.
Yay Teddy would also like an ice cream truck does that mean you buy him one?Chat Icon

the 3 most important things on your list above that should have squashed the thought of getting a dog for him... That you don't want one, you are ALLERGIC & that he's not home to take care of it.

I'm an animal lover and couldn't imagine a home with a pet... but I have to agree. If you are allergic, don't want one and he isn't home to take care of it... it's just not going to work out. What about a different pet?

Re: Look for the post that I have tied my DH to a tree...

This is a very similar thread on the Relationship board about the same thing. Please take a look.

Do not get a dog. Do not. Do not. The dog will suffer b/c you will likely not keep it. That's not fair to a dog to be taken in with the great odds of having to be rehomed again. And dogs are just like children. They have needs, they get sick and vomit and poo all over sometimes, they add additonal cleaning to the household, they cost $$$$$ to take care of, they have needs and feelings and crave attention that you will likely be giving your children. Children and young dogs just do not mix quite often b/c the child's needs will come before the dog and the dog will suffer. In addition, if YOU are allergic, odds are you won't want to go around living feeling ill all the time so eventually the dog would have to be rehomed. Do whatever it takes to make your Dh SEE THE LIGHT. Even if it means making him read this thread.

Please read this thread and all the responses. http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic-638490-1.html

See thats the thing even with the allergy and the fact I would be on allergy pills the rest of my life and so on and so forth I would never punish the innocent dog. (If my DH was dumb enough to bring one home without my permission). I would love him or her like it was my own child. I would never give a dog up because my husband made a poor choice. I would just suffer through it KWIM? I love animals I really do, I love my aunts dog even though I have to take an allergy pill to be around him!! I grew up with a bunch of different dogs, and I was always sick!! For me I just don't want a dog RIGHT NOW!!! I don't even want the topic on the table, and he keeps putting it there. And besides if he brought a dog home and I got rid of it he would NEVER speak to me again!

Re: Look for the post that I have tied my DH to a tree...

I grew up with pure bread German sheperds. They shed. A LOT. I am allergic to dogs... NOT a good combination!!!

They need to "work". Those dogs need discipline and be trained on a regular basis. They are "lost" if left out on their own.

I love German Sheperds but they are a lot of work. They cannot be left alone with young children or older people or handicapped people. And you want a female as a family dog.

And when you buy a new house, I would not want ANY dog for a while. I would want to be settled in.

I understand. You sound like a smart and loving person for sure. Esp to consider taking a pill daily to keep a pet.Chat Icon But I think you hit the nail on the head, esp with young children, now is NOT the right time. My 2 dogs exhaust me but as you said, I love them like they are my children (they were here long before DD). So I just exhaust myself giving them what they need b/c that's what they deserve. So I understand exactly what you are saying and do agree, now is just not the right time. I do hope your DH respects your feelings and doesn't make such a serious choice about getting a pet without your permission.Chat Icon

Re: Look for the post that I have tied my DH to a tree...

So DH agreed tonight that we will wait. Wanna know how I had to convince him? I had to tell him that if his Aunt is driving 45 minutes to see us, she WILL be bringing her small dog, and if we have a dog he won't feel comfortable and we won't see his aunt. Also NO VACATION def got him!!
