Question about when the baby comes home

I had a question about what the baby should sleep in when I bring her home? Im 38w and 4days so she can come at any time. Should she sleep in a sleep sack right away? Or in a Swaddle Me? The weather is so unpredictable so I dont know what I should run out and get. Also I plan on using the Graco Pack n Play with the newborn sleeper as a bassinet for the baby. Anyone use this- good, bad, etc.?

Thanks for all your help-super nervous first time mom to be.

Re: Question about when the baby comes home

DS was born at the end of may and we would put him in just a onsie and swaddled with a recieving blanket. The hospital blankets will be fine for a while. you will be getting up a lot during the night at first so put DC is something that is easy to undo for diaper changes.

Re: Question about when the baby comes home

No advice on the pack and play...

but I used receiving blankets to swaddle DD, as she was bigger/older and in her crib we switched over to sleep sacks.

Good Luck!!!!

Re: Question about when the baby comes home

Sleep sacs aren't really feasible for newborns. They kick SO MUCH that they won't be held in with them. So swaddling is probably going to be your best bet. We have DD sleeping in the FP newborn rocker next to our bed (she has since we brought her home) since she HATED being swaddled and it was the only way she could sleep without her leg kicking keeping her awake.

As a rule of thumb, you dress your baby in one more layer than you wear. So if you're wearing a tshirt and shorts to bed, then a short-sleeve onesie with a swaddle blanket should be perfect. If you're wearing pants and long sleeves to bed, then maybe a long sleeve onesie with a swaddler.

I highly recommend the Aden & Anais swaddle blankets. They're amazing for swaddling because they're so nice and big, but also made of muslin which is a very breathable fabric. They're also great for putting over the infant car seat so people don't try touching the baby, or rolling up into a tube and putting around the baby's head so the head doesn't wobble in the infant car seat at the beginning. Super versatile. They sell them online (really good quality ones are a little more expensive) and at BBB and Target, even. They get softer with every wash.

As far as the PnP -- we have one with the NB sleeper attachment but DH never found it "safe" enough feeling for his liking and wouldn't let DD sleep in it. We have it set up at the bassinet level but DD still won't sleep in it (she's 11 weeks) because of the leg kicking since she won't let us swaddle her. We figure we'll eventually move her to her crib in her room and then she'll be ok sleeping in the PnP on trips. For now, it'll still be the yellow FP newborn rocker.

Good luck to you! HTH!

Re: Question about when the baby comes home

We used the bassinet attachment on the pack N play when DD#1 was born during the day downstairs and - also had an actual bassinet upstairs in our room.

We brought home a bunch of hospital blankets and they worked great for swaddling for a few months - eventually we bought the miracle blanket.

She wore a long sleeve onsie with side snaps for the first several weeks. DD#1 was born end of march.

Great advice-Mason has been sleeping innthe kimono shirts from the hospital, a diaper, and swaddled with an Aden & Anais swaddle blanket...

Re: Question about when the baby comes home

I was never a good swaddler with receiving blankets with DS. So we just used onesies and/or gowns under the Halo Sleepsack with Swaddle - best invention ever!

I used the PNP with the bassinet, worked perfectly!

I never swaddled DD. She slept in a sleep sac since the first night home and she always slept 6+ hours.

Re: Question about when the baby comes home

My son went right in the crib, and I plan the same for this baby as well. I did have him nap in the bassinet of the PnP when we were downstairs though.

I have a swaddler that goes with the halo sleep sack, so I will use that with a onesie if I think it's going to be cold overnight.
