Nassau Taxes
We are house hunting and we saw a house that we are interested in. I went to mynassauproperty.com and compared 2010 taxes with 2011 and it went up about $1,000 is that possible? I am new to this and live in Queens so this is all new to us.

Re: Nassau Taxes
Either they were reassessed, or they did an addition to increase the taxes.
Can you tell how long the home has been in possession of the current owner? We had the town come here and reassess after we closed.

Re: Nassau Taxes
According to their agent, they didn't do anything additional to the house, they only lived in it for 2 years.
Also, their STAR rebate is 1,200 but the year they didn't own it it was 1,500...why was they're rebate less then the previous owners?
Unfortunately this house won't work for us, the taxes are really high to begin with so on to the next one!

Re: Nassau Taxes
If they were only in it for 2 years, it is possible that the person they purchased from had other exemptions like senior discounts.

Re: Nassau Taxes
Yes. When we purchased our home our taxes were $9500 with nothing other than the regular STAR. town of Hempstead decided to reassess our home And our taxes went up approx. $1000 every year since we've been here This year our taxes actually went down $700. Not sure why
We will be in our house 5 years in April.

the previous owners were probably senior citizens and getting the enhanced start deduction instead!

Re: Nassau Taxes
It's probably a combination of factors. Different exemptions and the fact that Nassau County reassesses each and every year can lead to dramatic changes from year to year.
However, starting with the 2012/13 assessment year, Nassau will be reassessing every 4 years, not each year.
