Do you hire painters or DIY?

I have always been a DIY kind of girl when it comes to painting. I had an ex who was a painter/construction worker in college and he showed me all the tricks. My jobs aren't perfect, but they'll do.

Now it's come down to TIME. I feel like there just aren't enought hours in the day to prep, paint, dry, 2nd coat, trim etc--all w/ a 2 year old running around. I want to paint the kitchen, master bedroom, bathroom and POSSIBLY the kitchen/Foyer (basically my entire apartment besides the living room.)

So i'm thinking of outsourcing--but it kills me--because I've DIY for so long.

My husband is NOT a DIY kind of guy--reason #2 that the job has increased in difficulty.

Just wondering what you all do.

Re: Do you hire painters or DIY?

I hired someone b/c to me time is money, esp if it's a large job.

we hired someone bc we had just closed on our house and we didn't have time to paint everything. What would take us days took a crew of 4 a few hours. Since we found out how inexpensive and easy it was to hire a painter I'm not sure that we'll be doing any painting ourselves from now on

Re: Do you hire painters or DIY?

We used to do it ourselves, but now we're lazy and can afford it, so we hire people.

the time is worth the money spent IMO. Also depending on what you want to do, you could even pick up one of the guys outside home depot. DH and I were having a horrible time trying to paint the fence last spring. $100 later we were relaxing while someone else did a perfect job.

Re: Do you hire painters or DIY?

Except for the 2 bathroom remodels that we hired someone to do and also the LR remodel last year (it was part of the whole redo), "I" DYI.

DH does not have 1 oz of handiness in him.

I have a 3.5 yo so I know I can't paint either with him during the day.

I painted his playroom at night after dinner. DH watched DS. I did the prep 1 day, spakle, etc...1 coat 1 night. 2nd coat on day 3. Took about 1.5 hour each time but it went fast. It was actually therapeutic. I plan on painting other rooms too as DYI.

We will be doing an addition to the back of the house but for those remodels, I let the contractor paint the rooms that are remodeled.

I do both. I just repainted the trim and molding in my house, but I also hired someone to repaint a room for me.

Totally DIY. I won't pay anyone to paint.......what a waste of money IMO. Painting isn't hard, just a little time consuming. I just can't see paying someone to paint. And no painter will be as meticulous and anal as me when it comes to painting my own house. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I also have a 2 1/2 yr. running around and I am in the midst of painting my den, living room, dining room, etc. right now. Timing is hard, I either get my parents to watch her or I do things at night and when she's napping. It's more effort to do it myself but it's also really cheap labor! Chat Icon Chat Icon

DIY all the way. I won't pay a painter. For me this is one of the easiest home improvements I can do.

I'm perfectly able to paint an entire room all by myself.... and I have in the past.

I agree. Just having to work it around our work schedules, it would have taken forever for us to paint. We hired someone that was recommended to us. He had a crew of about 8 people. The job was totally completed in about 4 days.

If it's one room, we've done it ourselves and would continue to do so, probably.

If it's a huge job -- such as basically painting the whole house when we first moved in -- we've hired a professional painter (who also removed wallpaper, smoothed out the walls, etc.). It wasn't worth the time or aggravation, and the painter we used was highly recommended, very meticulous and neat, and quite reasonable in cost.

Re: Do you hire painters or DIY?

both...it depends on time and visibility of the room. we had the LR/DR done professionally but have done everything else ourselves. we just didnt have time for the LR/DR plus i wanted it to be close to perfect since everyone sees those rooms!

I wouldn't hire anyone to paint. I would either do it myself or have my Dad help me Chat Icon

Re: Do you hire painters or DIY?

We just did a ton of renovations. We did the demo. We hired someone to move plumbing fixtures and heating vents. My DH hung all the sheetrock (that took forever Chat Icon ) and then we hired someone to come in and tape and Spackle. We did the painting, we thought that was the easiest part! We bought the Pergo flooring and now are deciding to DIY or hire??

Re: Do you hire painters or DIY?

We DIY everything! DH spackles, tapes the ceilings and cuts in, and I paint the walls. I have a very particular method to painting, and our house (which, along with my FIL, I painted 90% of it) looks near perfect, except for the 10% that DH painted Chat Icon

Re: Do you hire painters or DIY?

We've done both. I prefer to save money and do it ourselves, but I hear ya about time. It's super time consuming and tedious to do all the prep work for painting yourself. We've hired people to do a bathroom with cathedral ceilings recently bc it was just too annoying to consider doing ourselves. I called around and got a few quotes and went with the lowest. I don't regret it at all!

Re: Do you hire painters or DIY?

We hired someone to paint the outside of the house, and I would NEVER have attempted it myself, but inside I am perfectly happy to DIY! Right now I am in the middle of painting my kitchen. I started last weekend and in one day I did 1/3 of it. (my kitchen is HUGE otherwise I would have done it all in a day) But now it is on hold since I got sick and now DD has the flu, but the good thing is that I know it won't take more than 2 days to finish the job and I am not in a rush.

Re: Do you hire painters or DIY?

We did both... so I cant answer the poll... For some reason DH and I did the hard rooms ourselves (bathrooms) and then got stressed out and hired a coworker to paint DR and 2 bedrooms... then i got tired of spending money to have someone paint and we went back to painting our own bedroom Chat Icon
