Has anyone driven from Miami to Key West Updated 3/23
I know it will take a few hours. I would love to hear from anyone who has done it and what the experience was like.

Update 3/23
So we did it!
We left Wednesday the 16th and arrived in Miami about 12:30 in the afternoon. Rented a Ford Escape and drove down to Key West. I'm so glad we did it. Took alittle more than 4 hours but what a beautiful ride
Didn't feel like that long of a drive at all. And with that scenery...it was an easy drive.
Some friends (2 couples) met us down there on the 17th and we had such a blast. Came back on Sunday with what I think was the flu. Finally feeling better today.
I would recommend the trip to anyone.

I did it once when i was younger. I remeber it being long asss drive. I was going to do a few years ago for a destination wedding. I hopped on the puddle jumper, cheaper and quicker.

It was a long drive but I'd rather do that than head to a puddle jumper.

Did it a few years ago for a wedding...The road is long but it is pretty if it's a nice day.
We stopped at the No Name Pub on No Name Key for pizza which was fun.
I do have to say that one way was more than enough...coming back was really long and tedious. If you could do it one way and take a flight back it might be the way to go.

This is what I'm afraid of.
But it's something I always wanted to experience.
Flying into Miami and renting a car for 2 people is less than the price of 1 person flying into Key West.
I didn't even think of the one way option. I'll look into that.
As for the speed limit...I would definitely need to set the cruise control

We did it quite a few years ago and the one thing I remember is the horrible drive! From Miami to Key West we got stuck in bad traffic and I think it took more than 5 hours. It was definitely quicker going back - maybe 3.5?

I've done it a few times. I'd say my average time is probably 4 hours, but I've made it in 3.5 and it's taken me as long as 5.5 on occassion.
I really don't mind the drive, and would definitely recommend that anyone do it at least once. It can be frustrating especially if you get stuck behind a truck or something, because it's just the one lane for so long. BUT, you really do have to observe the speed limit and resist the temptation to pass anyone. There are many crosses along the road to remind you how important that is!

I've done it a few times. Once in the middle of the night. I wont do it anymore. LONG AND BORING. I would rather send the $$ and take the flight in. Saves so much time too. And IMO you don't need a car in Key West.

One of the most beautiful rides of my life (in day light) and some awesome night driving provided you have a convertible!! Takes about 3.5 hours and you can stop and pull over at random beaches and little places that get your interest. So long as you have the time, I say go for it!!

Same here! I drove from Rochester to Key West in college. That part is so beautiful I wouldn't mind doing it again. We drove back to Ft. Lauderdale and flew home from there. The Mustang convertible we rented to get to Ft. Lauderdale didn't suck either!

DH and I flew in to Ft. Lauderdale in May and drove to Key West for a wedding. It was a long drive, and we hit a ton of traffic going down. I kept being like "are we there yet?"
The way back wasn't so bad, but we had to leave at like 4 am to catch our flight.

We did it when I was 17 weeks pregnant! It was actually a nice and enjoyable ride.
Yes the return is annoying but honestly dont you feel teh same about the flight home from a vacation? the flight there is always fine, but on the way home (or back to my vacation locale), I just cant wait to get home and even a 2 hour flight seems like 10 hours!

its a long drive, at least 3½ hours or more, depending on how fast you drive and how much traffic there is.
i don't particularly care for being in a car for hours on end and the drive is much like driving on any other main highway.
grrreat key lime pie though!

Yeah, we rented a convertible too and started the drive...in August. At midday. Yeah, that top went up pretty fast. 
Loved the drive! DH and I just love taking off and driving anyhow though. Enjoy your trip!!

My friend and I did the drive. We had a great time. The views were great. We also drove back to Miami and I think we stopped in Key Largo to swim with dolphins before we drove to our flight in Miami.
Totally worth it!
