vegetable garden from seed

I'm going to give it a shot this year and if I fail, I'll get some seedlings in May.

When do I plant seeds? I know I start a little earlier, since they are still in the ground, but how early is too early?

I start lettuces, zucchini, cucumbers, beans, cabbage, broccoli and a few other things from seed every year. I will put some of it in the greenhouse this week (I have heat mats). I have never had any luck with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant or any other real hot loving plant from seed. They get so lanky and never mature. The cooler weather/hardy crops do better in my experience. I have used the indoor trays with the cover many times, they work well.

I just picked up a huge tray from a brand called Jiffy....it was like $7 in Lowes. It has little soil pellets that you moisten, and then you kind of gently fluff it and put your seeds in them, and put the tray cover on.

I'm not doing veggies yet (I want to see how the flower do first, and then if it goes well - I will try herbs and veggies)

I think the best way is to start indoors with a little tray and system. The soil is generally really good & starts you off - then you can transfer them outside when the time comes - but of course this depends on the kind of veggie/flower you want to grow.

Hope that helps!

Broccoli and Cabbage: cool season (Spring and Fall). Started seeds last week. And still a bit late in the season to start.

Tomatoes: Start now. You cannot start them in the garden. It takes too long to mature before season is over

Started my eggplants

Pepper: starting soon.

I am about to start my lettuce.

Starting from seeds in the garden directly: zucchinis, yellow squash, cucumber. I have had good success starting from seeds directly in the garden.
