Hole in the heart?
Sorry for crashing, but does anyone have experience with a baby being born with a hole in his/her heart? We had a fetal echo today and the doctor said he’s not really sure if there’s a hole. He wants to see us again in 4 weeks when the baby will be bigger so he can get a better picture. If you have a child that was born with a hole in his/her heart, would you mind sharing your experience?

Re: Hole in the heart?
DS had a hole in his heart (VSD).
Many kids have this and they are fine.
DS needed 2 heart surgeries (coarc and VSD). We were unaware of his heart condition when he was in my womb. We found out at his 2 week appointment.

Re: Hole in the heart?
My eldest DD has an ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) it's a hole in between the upper 2 chambers of the heart...
The hole is very small...As it stands right now she doesnt need any surgery to repair it. (She is 17 years old)

Re: Hole in the heart?
No personal experience but my best friend had one and he was operated on immediately after birth and is perfectly healthy today (29 years old). My aunt had one at birth and didn't have an operation for it until she was in her 40s and is perfectly healthy today and has two children (19 and 16 y/o).

Re: Hole in the heart?
My younger DD (14 mths) has an ASD. we go back next month to see if it has closed, srhunk, grown, stayed the same, etc. If it stays the same or gets bigger, she will eventually (most likely) have to have it closed. I am it has closed.

My DD was born with a hole in her heart (VSD). We found out 2 days after she was born when the ped heard a murmur. It closed up on its own within 7 months.

DD also was born with this. The doctors advised us about it while she was in the NICU (she was a preemie). We were advised to follow up with a cardiologist when she was 3 months. It had already closed up on its own by then.

Re: Hole in the heart?
Thanks for the responses everyone! It's comforting to know that even if they do find a hole, it's possible it could be nothing at all.

Re: Hole in the heart?
DD was born with a VSD (a hole between the ventricles). We found out the day she was born (they heard a murmur during labor) and it closed on it's own within 5 months.
