Would you buy a house w/o a ????

a garage?

My SIL is looking at this beautiful home but it doesnt have a garage. She has 3 children with tons of bikes and "stuff" I'm trying to get her to keep looking. I think it would be a dealbreaker for me. But, wondering what others thought??

FYI: There is no room on the property to build one but, there is already a small shed in the yard.

Personally, no. I used my garage for major storage for so many things. I wouldn't be able to have a house without one.

We did. We have a shed and a full basement, so plenty of storage for us.

Re: Would you buy a house w/o a ????

DH would never.

We have a shed, basement at 1 car garage...its never enough with kids! As DS gets older we are at a loss on where to put all his stuff that needs to be stored (bikes, power wheels etc, plus all our outdoor stuf)

we don't have a garage. the previous owners converted the garage into a laundry room and formal dining room. we have a big shed in our yard that we use for storage of things that would normally go in the garage.

No. I can deal without a basement but I HAVE to have a garage.

I personally like having a garage. I use it for my car. I like in the winter and in the summer, putting my car in the garage. It stays warmer and it stays cooler. It is good with children also. I put them in the car before I open the garage door, so they do not feel the cold or the heat.

Re: Would you buy a house w/o a ????

This is definitely on our "must-have" list. We have a jeep wrangler and are going to need alot pf space to store the hard top and accessories, plus just even having more space to store random cr@p you accumulate- especially with kids. But I think its just a personal thing- I've seen lots of beautiful houses with no garage. If you can deal with just keeping your stuff in a shed, basement and attic then you should be golden

no..I have no idea where I would put all the stuff that is in there now...lawnmower, other lawn/grass stuff...my DH tools and other house/work stuff..his ladder(s) we also like to put our patio table and chairs in there during winter and our gas grill...not to mention bikes. strollers, play cars, bubble mowers, blow up pool...extra outdoor chairs for parties....the list is endless...lol

Re: Would you buy a house w/o a ????

For us it would be a dealbreaker, because DH likes to keep his car in there. For me, it doesnt matter as much...as long as we had a shed or something for storage, I dont think I'd need a garage.

Re: Would you buy a house w/o a ????

Growing up we didn't have a garage (just a shed) and we were fine.
Of course we had a basement for storage.

Looking at houses, we needed either a basement or a garage...we needed some form of storage!

Re: Would you buy a house w/o a ????

i don't think so....we have a 2 car garage now and i can't imagine not having one anymore...we put 1 car in use the rest of the garage for storage...

my inlaws and sister in law do not have garages and they have serious storage issues...

I personally wouldn't -- we wanted at least a 1 car garage, and we bought a house with a 2 car attached garage. We mainly use it for storage and we keep an extra refrigerator/freezer in there, which is great for entertaining (our garage leads into our familly room).

But garages do add some value, and someone who is working on a tight budget may need to sacrifice amentities such as a garage, basement, etc. to get into an area they want.

I have customers who really don't care about having a garage, even though they have kids or you would think would want the storage. It's just a personal preference (much like the question of having a basement). If your sister-in-law doesn't care about the garage and is happy to store bikes, etc. in the shed, then I don't think she is making a mistake in buying a house without a garage, especially if she is looking to live in the house long-term and not thinking of resale value.

I don't have one. I do have a large shed, a big basement, and a huge attic. I would like a garage, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me.

Re: Would you buy a house w/o a ????

no way-- but for me a deal breaker was a detached garage. If she just needs it for storage, than perhaps there are other places to store things. With a small child, I needed a garage attached to the house for inclement weather, etc.

I would, but this is coming from the perspective of a woman who currently lives in a co-op and is looking for a home ... we don't have that much stuff as of right now so to us it's not that important.

However, I recognize that once our DD comes and gets older and amasses tons of crap, my tune may change. Chat Icon

yes, we are in the process of doing so.

there is a HUGE shed in the back and insane amounts of storage in the home - basement and more than ample closets

I personally wouldn't, if there was no room to add one. And I have a 2 car garage, basement, attic plus 2 sheds... and I still need them all, but thats just me.

generally, no. it was a must for us, but I supposed if there was a large shed of outdoor storage maybe we would.
I am so used to my garage i think I would be lost without it... we were only will to sacrifice a small part of it to add a second bathroom to out house cause we really do use it!

Nope! But only because my husband and I are really into cars, and we hope to get a nice old car and restore it together in the future.

For now, I store my car in there in the winter so I don't have to clean it off when it snows and we use it for storage.
