Re: laminate wood or carpet...

Oops, should have read the whole post, before I said laminate. Sorry!! However, we use to live in a house where the basement flooded. We used carpet, but didn't glue it down; We rolled it up whenever the rain started. Someone on our street told us there was an underground stream, so when it rained, basements flooded. I forgot we got a flooded basement when I told you in the other thread, that my childhood house flooded. We have carpet in a downstairs bedroom, in our present house, and while we do not have flooding, because DH, put a basement "trench" in when we built, the basement is damp, and this has affected the carpet, so, I'm not sure what would work best. Re: laminate wood or carpet...

thanks for your reply Mary!
i shouldnt have any problems with flooding in the future...just need to learn how to be the only adult of the house and know when a sump pump is working and when its not Chat Icon

i am still so lost at what to put down there! its so cold in the winter which is like 8 months out of the year here that i think carpet would make it warmer feeling...but then i think about vaccuming it yuck!

thank you!
i read it...it dosent say anything about carpeting though?
i know that laminate would be easier to clean for a playroom...but carpeting would be sooo much warmer in the cold months which is like end of sept-beg. of june here

I agree that carpeting makes basement feel warmer, and more like a "real" room. But if there's any chance of future flooding, I'd go with the laminate not wall-to-wall carpeting. You can always put down area rugs to give it a cozier feel.

Sorry you had to deal with the water in your basement. That's the worst!

Re: laminate wood or carpet...

thanks century 21 guy!

flooding shouldnt be a problem in the future
and carpeting is only in half the basement....its painted cement in the laundry and "workshop"

flooding shouldnt be a problem in the future if i am not so stupid and figure out how a sub pump is supposed to work!

Re: laminate wood or carpet...

had the same dilemma for our family room. its' below grade so we did worry about water. we went with the carpet. the kids are on the floor and it's sooooooo nice and cozy they love it down there. yes vaccuming is annoying but it's only that room and the basement that have carpet

Re: laminate wood or carpet...

Candice, if flooding would no longer be an issue, once the sump pump works correctly, there are certain kinds of carpet that are mildew resistant, which might work for you, if the basement is cold, and damp. Mary
