fireplace/chimney help!

On Sunday (we had ALOT of rain/wind) night we noticed water leaking into our fireplace...

We called a chimney guy who came to look at the fireplace yesterday and basically charged $50 to tell me there is nothing wrongChat Icon

Im glad he was honest; heck he could've told me it needed 2k worth or work; and I wouldnt of known any better and payed to have it fixed....

BUT I KNOW that its leaking; we filled a bucket half way during the last rain/storm....and now today its supposed to rain again; and Im so worried its going to be a disaster....

What do I do? Wait it out? Call someone else?

We dont use the fireplace; and dont plan to anytime soon- so I dont care if its "working" but I def. dont want a flood in my dining room...

The chimney guy said its normal for some chimneys to let in water during real bad wind/rain storms... he also suggested that the brick/"grout" between the bricks may have become porrus and told DH to buy some sealer and apply it...

So we are going to try that- but in the meantime ImChat Icon

When we first moved in we had the chimney cleaned and that company said we needed a new liner- yesterdays chimney guy said absolutely not- liner is clean and in good repair...

I hate thisChat Icon Anyone have any advice/experience?

Do you have a Chimney cap? Could it be your roof? Is it leaking inside the fireplace?

Yep; we have a cap...

My gutters are a mess and have been since before we moved in, but because of the snow/ice on the roof DH hasn't been able to get up there and clean them....

But yesterdays guy said that the gutters arent the cause...

I mean if I stick my hand into the fireplace and touch the bricks they are damp!

I would get a second opinion

You could possible need a new cap or flue...

Is your flew closed? If it is then I would get a second opinion.

This happened to a friend of mine and people kept telling her there was nothing wrong. It turned out she actually needed a new flew lining because that was cracked. It was like a water fall in heavy rain.
