Re: Newport or Providence Rhode Island??
My vote is for Newport. There's plenty to do for a couple of days and if you stay in town you can walk to most shopping, dining, bars, etc... A personal favorite is the Atlantic Beach Club- you'll need to drive to it, but it's nice to sit outside and have drinks and then eat inside; the restaurant is great! And by the way, if you're on a budget (like DH and I always are) you can stay outside of Newport and then just day trip there. We always stay in Westerly, which is this great little beach town. We stay at The Tradewinds Motel. It's certainly nothing special, but it's cheap, clean and walking distance to the beach and little town. Another great day trip is to tale the ferry out to Block Island. You can go horseback riding, walk around the town or just go to the beach. We always go the beach to the right of where the ferries dock. It's part of a hotel, but it's public and you can order food and drinks right there on the beach.

Also The Fifth Element Restaurant and bar is a great spot. The food is awesome and the place is lively.

Re: Newport or Providence Rhode Island??
Newport. Providence is nice- but not much to do on the weekend- we went for 4th of July and we went to Newport for the whole day- next time we would stay there.
I would say take a trip to Providence to walk around by where brown and RISD are- but otherwise stay in Newport.
