tell me if I messed up the STAR application

If I did, I am going to be so mad at myself.

I filled out all the forms and they were taken to the town in person. I have proof showing I filed them. However, I never gave out financial info showing how much we earn - like last years tax info.

I ask b/c I went to find out the answer for Mici C's post and while looking online, I came across info that I was supposed to show income amounts for last year. I never did, and the person at the desk never asked for it, either.

Anyone know?Chat Icon

I think you only need to show income if you're going for enhanced STAR. This is from the application:

Did the combined income of the owners and spouses who reside on the property exceed $500,000 in the 2009 income tax year? Note: The Tax Department will be confirming the income eligibility of STAR recipients. Yes No
If yes, you are not eligible for the STAR exemption for the 2010-2011 school year.

Do you or your spouse own any other property that is currently receiving the STAR exemption? Yes No
Do you or your spouse own property in another state that you are claiming as your full time residence and are receiving a residency tax benefit, such as the Florida Homestead exemption? Yes No
If yes, please give the address of each such property:

You may be eligible for a larger school property tax savings if you meet these age and income requirements:
1. If you are applying for STAR for the 2011-2012 school year:
a) Will all owners be at least 65 years of age as of December 31, 2011? OR
b) If the property is owned by a husband and wife or by siblings, will at least one of the spouses or siblings be at least 65 years of age as of December 31, 2011? Yes No
2. Is the total 2009 income of all the owners, and of any owners’ spouses residing on the premises, $79,050 or less? (See definition of income for STAR purposes on back of form.) Yes No
If the answer to both questions 1 and 2 is yes, all owners, including non-resident owners, must attach a copy of either their 2009 federal or 2009 State income tax return (if filed). (Tax schedules and tax form attachments are not routinely required.) The assessor may require proof of age. Return this form to your local assessor by taxable status date. Do not file this form with the New York State Office of Real Property Tax Services.
Caution: Anyone who misrepresents his or her primary residence, age or income shall be subject to a $100 penalty,

You didn't screw them up.

The only time you need to show financial information is if you are a senior citizen applying for the enhanced STAR.

The basic STAR program is available to every homeowner in NYS provided that the house is your PRIMARY residence.

In Suffolk, you need the application and a copy of your driver's license or utility bill showing that the house is your primary residence. (Some towns ask for a copy of the deed, but most don't).

In Nassau, you need a copy of the deed and ID showing that the house is your primary residence.

No worries - you didn't mess it up.

You didn't mess anything up. We've had STAR for a year under our name now, and we just got a letter that as of 2010 in Brookhaven, they need a copy of your tax return and SS# showing income. So I had to mail that in to them.

I verfied the letter, and sent it in.

Nope, only for enhanced, so you should be fine. It takes MONTHS for you to get an answer though so as long as you did it before December 31, 2010 you won't find out until Fall.

No, I wouldn't. I think they said it was new for 2011. So, since yours would be going into effect in 2012, I would wait for them to ask for it.
