Christening gift question

We have a christening to go to on Sunday- it’s for DH’s best friend who was the best man at our wedding. It’s at Leonard’s in Great Neck. DH and I are arguing about how much is appropriate to give. Just wanted some opinions…TIA.

Re: Christening gift question

Heres an idea: I always give US Government Savings Bonds. I know you can purchase them at Capital One Banks (without an account). I usually spend $100 so when the child is older & the bond matures it will be worth $200. My mom has it drilled into my head to always put the bond into the childs name that way the child will have the gift for their future.

ITA!

But if not, I'd probably give $200. I mean, it's not a wedding!

Re: Christening gift question

Personally, I would probably give around $100......$150 if you want to be generous, but in the end, it's just a christening.. I think the numbers you have listed here are more like a wedding.... If you guys want/can give more, more power too you! :)

Bonds are a good idea, but they take SO LONG to mature these days that the kid will probably have his own kid before he can cash it... JMO

I get what you're saying, I only said $200 because of the location. My cousin's daughter was Christened last October and the party was held at a VFW hall. I gave $100.

I would give $50-$100.

First of all, the location makes NO difference in the gift I give. I don't care if it's at Buckingham Palace--I'll give according to my relationship with the people involved.

In your scenario, we'd probably end up being very generous because of the best man thing--I'd say my DH would insist upon giving $300.

Ordinarily, I'd give $100. My son was christened in January and that was the average gift.

ITA. Jut make sure you put the parents as a beneficiary not a co-owner bc then they can still cash in on the money.

Because of the relationship factor I would give $200-$300...this is what we have given to our close friends.

Re: Christening gift question

I like to give bonds -- honestly because I know a lot of parents who would pocket the cash. You're supposed to be giving a gift for the KID.

And then they get twice what you spent and (I feel) a bonus is that YES, they do take a long time to mature but guess what? You know how much that kid's gonna appreciate having an extra 200-300 bucks from you when they are dirt poor in college or just about to get married?

I cashed my bonds in last year when I was engaged. I called the people up who they were from and thanked them again and told them that their gift was helping to pay for... XYZ.

Re: Christening gift question

Honestly, while Im grateful for the gift to my children, I hate when people give them bonds. Why can't you just give cash so that way we can put it into their savings account to collect more interest? I really don't think there's that many parents that pocket the cash for themselves. I still have bonds that I got from my grandparents from when I was like 8 and they still haven't matured yet so I can't do anything with them. Meanwhile I paid for cars, a wedding and a house that the money could have come in handy for. To each their own I guess but I always give cash.

And to answer the original question, I would agree with a PP that $100 would be fine but $150 if you would like to be generous. DC's baptism was this past Sunday and the average amount was right around $100.

This - except, I'd give $100 as well (we had our DS christened and that's what our best man and his family gave DS).

Given the relationship I'd give the $100-$200.

Bonds are also a great idea..put them in the child's name and that can go torwards their college education.

Re: Christening gift question

we'd probably do about $150

But definitely not a savings bond- you can get better interest rates than that elsewhere and if you have to worry about the parent's pocketing the money that's just insane and why would you be friends with anyone like that?

ITA about not a savings bond. After speaking iwth my friend who is a bank manager, she explained that the bond keeps the interest rate of when it was purchased. Since the rates are so low now, a bond that only earns $100 dollars or so over 20 or 30 years of maturing isnt that much of a benefit.

I would give a check of $100. The location wouldnt determine how much I give. The gift should be for the child, not to help that parents cover the cost of the party.

Ditto. I give a check, it's not up to me to decide how parents use the money for their child and if they choose to invest it, they will earn more than on a bond.

I love this idea and have done it as well. Cash I usually give 100 for a Christening. Honestly, they are choosing to have it at a catering hall, which is great, but I give the same whether it is at the persons home or at the Plaza.I would give more is if it was a niece, nephew or godchild.
