Storage

First let me preface this by saying- I apologize for so many questions on the Home board! DH and I are looking for our first home and its slightly overwhelming.

The main area we're looking in is Levittown. As many of you know, most Levittown houses do not have a basement. Growing up my parents stored everything in our basement. We had alot of junk!! (hand me down clothes, holiday decorations, xmas tree, just "stuff" in general, dad's tool, etc)

Well this got me thinking...

If a house does not have a basement or a garage...where do you store things? DH said if we have four bedrooms use one for storage, but I hate the idea of using a bedroom for storages.

Thoughts?

Re: Storage

One thing I needed was a garage since we didnt have a basement. If you buy a house that doesnt have either you will hopefully have an attic or eaves to store things in. You can also get a storage shed for the back yard.

Re: Storage

A basment was a must for us... but NOT for storage!!! We have a tiny boiler room with a few things in there, but thats, its now a bar/den/someday playroom for future kids.

We use our garage and our attic (just had a door installed to access the attic when we re-did the basement). Do you have an attic?
Also, what about putting a shed in the yard somewhere?

Re: Storage

We live in a Levitt. It's tight on storage. We have all 4 eaves open and full and we have 2 sheds in either corner of the backyard.

Re: Storage

We have a Levitt House with a Garage which was key for us! We also have a shed in the backyard. I don't know what we would do if we didn't have the garage.

Re: Storage

A basement was a MUST for us... but not for storage. We have a playroom, office, laundry room and the best part EXERCISE room down there! Most of our storage is in our attic and 2 car garage.

Re: Storage

i'm not sure if i would buy a house without a basement OR a garage. we don't have a basement and i wish all the time that we did. if we had looked for a house on our own, that probably would have been a *must* but we wound up getting my grandparents house, for a deal & to keep it in the fam. we have a garage, a shed and even some storage under the staircase (i can fit all christmas ornaments, decorations and leaves for dining table in there so it's decent space) and i STILL wish for a basement. and i don't even have kids yet!

Re: Storage

we dont have a basement or garage. we have a large shed in the yard and an attic. we also have a storage closet under the stairs. right now we have plenty of room. i can see where some people would see it as not enough space for the future (kids etc) but i plan on keeping the clutter and junk to minimum.

Re: Storage

We don't have a garage but we do have a basement, attic and a big shed in the back yard.

My husband and I both grew up in high ranch houses so we never had basements before - the garage and attic were the storage options for us then. So, giving up a garage but having a full (unfinished) basement and a full attic was fine with us.

We do hope to finish part of the basement but will keep a storage area for sure. The shed is the lifesaver though - all of the landscaping equipment and outdoor furniture is stored out there.

A basement is a must for us but more so for a playroom and space for the kids "crap" If I didn't have either I would hope for a large attic and put a shed in the yard.

Where would you store outdoor stuff like bikes and a grill?
