Honey for a cough?
Does anyone do this? DS is 16 months and I've heard that you can give honey for a cough, especially at night?
Does it really work? How much do you give? Plain on a spoon or mixed with something?
ETA: Ped told us he could have honey at his 12 month apptmt.

You can and I always do it for myself, just on a spoon. I tried with my 3 yr old recently and she hated it lol. GL

I would really call the ped for suggestions since you will get a lot of different responses around here. Do you have a humidifier in his room? Also, you could run a hot shower and take him in the bathroom with the steam.

Babies digestive system isn't strong enough to deal with botulism, until they are 2. Its nothing to do with weight.
Def talk to your ped before introducing honey.

I use it anytime DS has a cough, or myseld for that matter. I think it works better than cough medicine. Just a little teaspoon of it, whenever needed. Sometimes with lemon.
Eta: DS is 4.5 yrs old and quite honestly I don't know what age it was that I first tried honey on him, but I have always heard no honey before 1 year. Even says 1 year on the bottle.

as for helping colds, DH puts 1/2 cup of honey in his tea when he's sick, he's convinced it helps him.

Honey with lemon in hot tea-good old cough remedy! Go for it!
In the case of a 1 year old I would of course just use hot water rather than actual tea bag!

Agreed....
Im pretty laid back with foods and such; but there recently was a whole article in the paper about honey for young children and we will DEF be waiting on that!

ive given my little man buckwheat honey, ive read it is better than cough syrup for a cough. it helps relieve his coughing at night.

I've used the "Little colds Honey Elixer" for Kailey at night. It says ages 1 and up on it.
I just put it in a syringe like I would with medicine and she took it that way. It seemed to help her through the night :)

Thanks everyone. He managed to sleep through the night last night after finally settling down at 11ish. Cough is definitely worse today though. Called the ped last night and she said the usual - humidifier, elevated mattress, steam in bathroom.

YES! best thing EVER! DD loves it, I give her a spoonful of honey before bed when she has a bad couch and it helps sooo much .
