What about doing built-ins next to the fireplace? As for the fireplace/mantle I'd paint that white for sure!
I'm not a fan of brick so I would definitely paint it. Not pure white though b/c that might be too much for the whole wall.
Maybe you can do something like this with the brick, a white wash...

No way! I love the brick! I would just stain the mantle darker, maybe like a cherry color.

I would leave the brick and either paint or stain the mantle. For the brick between the mantle and the fireplace, I would remove and replace with tile or stone.

I'd leave the brick. I hate painted brick with a passion so I would never paint it. I would paint the mantel white to give it a more modern look. I definitely agree with the suggestion to cover the exposed brick within the mantel with a granite or some natural type of stone.

I would paint the mantel White and they make a special spray paint for heat I would spray paint the fire place screen Black.

Wow thanks everyone!! I def don't want to paint the brick but I never even thought of the mantle being too big/high. I do want to keep the brick and now I'm thinking about staining the mantle darker and I'll look into replacing the brick around the fireplace screen. Also, the floor is pergo so that will be replaced w/real eventually. I'm also lookiing for a new ceiling fan. Thanks again!!
