Morning and evening nursing only by choice

I remember reading a few moms saying that they moved to morning and evening nursing without pumping during the day. How did you do it and when did you do it? I am not thinking about doing it now but was thinking that I want to move to that schedule and supplement with formula. How do you do that without affecting milk supply?

Re: Morning and evening nursing only by choice

When DS was about 13 months old I was nursing 4xs per day. Morning, before AM nap, before PM nap, and before bed.

I decided to drop before nap times and substituted the nursing routine with reading a book.

My milk supply just adjusted.

I nursed morning and night for about a month. Then I dropped night and 2 or 3 weeks later dropped morning. By 15 months he was completely weaned.

You can't. Your body replaces what's taken out. If the baby takes less from you, overall supply will drop. Bottles are easier to get food out of than a breast, so the baby might wind up rejecting BFing altogether.

Re: Morning and evening nursing only by choice

I started doing this when DS was 9 months old. I was having a very hard time keeping my pumping schedule at work and was down to pumping one time at work. At that point, I stopped pumping and would nurse morning and evening only.

My supply adjusted. I thought I would dry out completely, and to be honest, I have a very small supply to begin with, but I was still able to nurse twice a day.

Now I nurse once a day. Same, my body adjusted. Although I usually still have to give a bottle after I nurse, just a smaller bottle. He's been nursing for just a couple of minutes so I think it won't be too much longer before he weans by himself. Chat Icon Chat Icon
