My neighbor put up caution tape LOL!

We have "spots" and it is common courtesy not to park in them but I would never put something to block my spot.

Last week, I came home and "my" spot was taken. I grumbled, but what can you do. I pulled into my driveway (with two cars already in there) b/c no other spots were dug out.

The woman's husband came home from work (I was standing at the window with DD) and ran inside, got the keys and moved his wife's car to another spot. Then, he yelled at her for parking there DH moved my car into the spot and thanked the guy. It was actually really nice!

My dad lives in a pretty large complex in Queens with limited street parking but a lot of the apartments come with a parking spot in a lot. My dad does not have a parking spot so he (and I, when I lived there) would have to drive around to find spots. What the lovely people who do have parking spots do is park in the street in front of their building if there is a space leaving their parking spot empty.

I guess since it's a public street they can park anywhere they want but I just find it rude that they can't park in their personal spot that is only 20 feet away just because they can!

I haven't had the nerve to do it but my neighbors are pretty considerate about leaving us one spot. We only have a one car driveway. The neighbors next door and across the street have no driveway. Two other neighbors have more cars than fit in their 3 or 4 car driveways.

I am 5 months pregnant and I have a one year old. All I ask is that I can get my son out of the car. If I have to put a garbage can there to make sure that happens, I will. You want a spot, dig out your own. Don't park in front of my house because you are too lazy to do your own shovelling.

We don't save it, but I feel like we should!! There is a common spot outside our house that we use 99% of the time. Just the logistics of our community, it's never an issue that we use it.
BUT, two times in the past few days, people have parked there. I DO have a problem with it because DH shovels it meticulously because I am in and out with the kids. They choose not to park in the overly snowed in spots that ARE available and assume that I should park there..? I think not! It's RUDE!

honestly I think it depends on the neighborhood. I have lived in areas that this is commonplace. In my old neighborhood in Boston we did this even when it wasnt snow....middle of the summer people saved spots....its just how it was.

People don't do this in my neighborhood, which surprises me because we're all 2-family houses around here and street parking is necessary...I guess everyone's got their usual spots and they only shovel those out...the only time I get seriously ****** is when the college guys two doors down have a bunch of guests over and don't bother to shovel space out for them...inconveniencing everyone else on the block.

We do not have this problem bc we dont park in the street BUT if someone parked in a spot in front of MY house that I dug out, I don;t know seems a little foul.

Now if you are talkinga packed block with aprtments not one family homes okay. But if the spot in front of my house is dug out by me and you take it INSTEAD of digging your own spot? That would tick me off!

We don't have parking in m y building - its all street parking. We are also surrounded by one family homes. So its everyone in my building (91 units) plus homeowners looking for spots every night.

I'm sorry but I'm moving your marker if I need to get into a spot. I dug my vehicle out just as you did. The street is no ones property.

I have a 4.5 month old son who I pick up every night from my mom's after working all day. I'm not going to circle the blocks looking for a spot when there are more than plenty being blocked by a garbage can.

If it's in front of your house oh well...snow storms s uck for everyone.

My 2 cents:
The streets are public. Therefore, nobody owns or claims spots. Maybe my opinion has changed since living in Queens, but oh well. You buy a house by apartment buildings, expect people to park in front of your house. You buy a house by a school, expect people to park in front of your house. there are attached homes by us and I'm seeing it. The funny thing is that they have driveways in the back of their homes!

DH & I live in Brooklyn & we save a spot for my mom all year round. I have no problem saying that we do. My parents have a private driveway, however since purchasing our car we had our tires stolen once & then had our window broken in an attempt to steal our tires a second time. Each time our deductible was $1,000 on top of our regular monthly car & insurance payment. With DH being unemployeed that is just something we can't afford to be doing on a regular basis. So, since then we do not park our car on the street overnight anymore. My mom works in the afternoon 3pm-9pm & has a hard time finding parking when she gets home. So DH parks our car on the street & then when she gets home I put our car in the driveway.

Some neighbors have made comments about not liking the idea of it but I don't like those who steal from DH & I.

I would be afraid to take the space someone saved .. They might damage my car .. But If I just dug out a space for my car then someone pulled in it before I had a chance to . I would be furious..

I grew up in Queens and lived there until about a year ago, so I know first hand how frustrating it is to not be able to park near your home or to lose the spot you dug out.

That being said, digging out your spot doesn't give you ownership of it, so no, I would not and never have marked my spot by putting something in it. I'd always try to stick to the spot I dug out, but if it gets taken by somebody else, then I have no choice but to park elsewhere.

And honestly, if there was a can or a cone or a chair in a spot, that's the one I'd go for. It's obnoxious and I wouldn't hesitate to fling it out of my way and park!
