Both my neighbors planted ivy in their front yard. I can't stand it and am watching it vigilantly in case it makes its way into my yard. 
The one nice thing is that it stays green all winter. Oh, and I guess it's really low maintenance. I never see my neighbors watering or fertilizing it or anything.

I find this to be true of most things I love. Ivy, hostas window boxes... etc. I love most hate lol. Thank you for the input though  I bet in years to come I'll be taken over with it and maybe wonder why I did it.

I think it will be fine if you contain it to a trellis. I think it looks better growing UP a trellis than OUT, like on a lawn, KWIM?

Yes, we have some trellis against the fence along our driveway. We planted the ivy late fall.
I hope it grows upward fast.....I cant see how when its beyond frozen! LOL

I would definitely keep an eye on it so that it doesn't get out of control (more likely in years to come rather than right now). My parent's neighbor's entire backyard is ivy (instead of grass  whatever), and all summer it is a constant fight from my parents side to keep it from taking over as it comes up and over the 6ft stockade fence. If it is going to be near your neighbor's at all, I'm sure they would appreciate it if you made an attempt to keep it within your property lines as much as possible.
With that being said, I LOVE ivy, especially English Ivy. I even had it in my wedding bouquet. But I don't plant it here just because throughout my teen years I was generally the one in charge of fighting the ivy and I don't feel like doing that anymore.

Ivy takes over everything. Be prepared to maintain it if you only want it in a specific spot.

DO NOT DO IT!!!! Unless you are putting in a pot to stay indoors only or it will take over your entire garden byt the end of 2011! It is extremely invasive agressive plant and not something that should be planted unless you have a hill or something on your land that it can just go buckwild on because nothing else will grow there.
ETA: My mom is a master gardner and thats her opinion she said to check thier website if you want more information:

Most of my dad's front yard is ivy. He likes it because there's no maintenance required. It's been there my whole life, and I've never seen him have to do anything to it to keep it healthy. It will spread easily though, so be careful if you only want it in a certain spot.

LOL I kinda want it to take over. I love it. Here is a picture of some of the backyard. We have a hill and it would be awesome if it's went up the arbor you see there and then along our retaining wall. Excuse the no grass back there, this was early last spring.

Don't do it! 6 years later I am still fighting it from my previous home owner. A nightmare. It will go into your planting beds. I can't get rid of it. Every year I fight it. It spruce out everywhere.
