Decorating Advice wanted ladies! Update**

My living room is pretty big and it's missing something. i think that "something" is an area rug. I need help though b/c the focal point of my living room is the fireplace BUT the fireplace is NOT in the center of the room. I'm having a hard time finding what size area rug to go in my living room.

Should it be an 8 x 10, 11 x 14 or two 5 x 7's...one under the cocktail table and one in front of the two sitting chairs. advice is much needed... AND if u can help me find a rug based on my decor...rusty color pillows/green/some red /brown leather couch ...contemporary style i believe. Thank u!!!
Update:::::

I went to Target last night and I found this rug 7 X10.

http://www.target.com/Home-Floral-Rug-Collection-Blue/dp/B001LIW4RM

I tried soooo many different ways last night and i couldnt get it right. i ended up putting it under part of our sectional and coffee table. I WISH they had that rug in a smaller size for in front of the chairs but they dont :( I dont know what to do . I bought a brown leather ottoman also to tie the couch and chair area together. However, I need help finding a rug that matches the new rug I just purchased. Do I have to match or could it b a plain beige with some brown in it??
Thank u girls..u are all great!!

p.s. getting rid of the picture and doin all new decor to match the rug.. :) thank u for ur advice

Re: Decorating Advice wanted ladies!

Our decor in our condo was SO similar to your living room. In fact, we have the same chairs!

We had this rug and I really loved it....hoping to be able to use it somewhere in the new house too!

Re: Decorating Advice wanted ladies!

A large rug would be nice. Also, I personally would pull those two chairs out and have them face the coffee table, the backs to the stairs, so they create a conversation area with the people on the couch, I'm assuming there is a couch on the other side of the coffee table. This also will create more of an entranceway. The rug could go from the chairs to under the coffee table.

I think if I pull the two chairs towards our sectional it will take away from the fireplace and then what do i put in replace of the chairs? I love the size of the living room and if I do that wouldnt it take away from the size?? well, im not really sure this is why im askin everyone..thank u for ur advice

Re: Decorating Advice wanted ladies!

I think I would put one rug under the couch/coffee table area - a rectangular one. Then I would put a smallish circular or hexagon or octogan rug in front of the fireplace and 2 chairs. I would make the rugs coordinate but not the same pattern. This would separate the 2 spaces and make more of a reading nook in front of the fireplace.

Is there a tv somewhere?

eta: took a better look and saw there is no tv. I am jealous of the size of that room! It is such a great space!

Exactly what I was going to suggest.

Re: Decorating Advice wanted ladies!

I would put two rugs maybe 2 5x7 under each area. Did you ever think about changing the layout. I don't know if it will fit but if you move the sectional in front of the fireplace and move the two chairs where the sectional used be and put a long table against the wall where the chairs were. Then I would put an 8x10 area rug under the sectional.

Re: Decorating Advice wanted ladies!

I love the room!

Would put two separate rugs.

I think that are where there are two chairs and fireplace should be thought as a separate area and not really part of the living room. Maybe put a table in the middle or get two small couches and another coffee table and make it a more formal area.

I think that area needs a purpose with furniture in the middle and not just a rug.

I would go with two rugs that coordinate. Pulling those two chairs & table closer to the fireplace then add a console table or book shelf on that wall would cozy the room up.

Re: Decorating Advice wanted ladies!

I agree about the rugs. What if you pulled the couch out away from the wall a bit and put one of those behind the couch tables behind it? It would close off some of that big space and make it easier to create a "conversation area" with the other two chairs (even if it was only temporary for when people came over)

Re: Decorating Advice wanted ladies!

I would get 2 area rugs.. One in front of the fireplace, pull the chairs and the table by the area rug... and then in the place where those were, I'd get a console table and I'd lower that painting.. it's too high up.

the other fireplace would go by the sectional..

IF you want to have the fireplace as the focal point, you can swap the sectional and the other furniture in that area and put the 2 chairs and table by the window...

hope that makes sense

Re: Decorating Advice wanted ladies!

I agree - two rugs definitely

it will help create the 2 different spaces in the room - one under the coffee table, and one over by the chairs and as more of a conversation space. Perhaps a sage green, tan/off white or brown rug for the coffee table area and a complimentary color (rust/red) for the chair conversation area

i agree with some other posters about maybe moving the chairs out to be a little closer to the fireplace and perhaps putting a bookcase or a small cabinet on the wall where the chairs are now (and a nice big plant in the corner)
That will help the room look more arranged and define the spaces a bit better

such a beautiful room!

eta: yes, the painting is also too high, if you leave that area as is, perhaps move it to the left so you don't have to put it all the way above that lamp. It looks out of place the way you have it now.. (sorry, hate to criticize, but it does stand out)

Re: Decorating Advice wanted ladies! Update**

You DO NOT need to match the rug!

please, please, please do not make that mistake..you want things to compliment each other and you want that big space to be more like 2 rooms and not one.. so you want it to transition and flow from one area to another..

you can pull certain colors from that rug and use that as a color pallete if you wish, but you do not have to use that rug as your absolute say all in terms of decorating your space.. Chat Icon I hope that makes sense.

in terms of another rug, here are a few examples of what I would use.. Don't limit yourself to only rectangle..
