It's not normal, turn off the water and call a plumber asap you don't want anything to burst...

A plumber told me one time, being he was backed up to turn heat up and keep the door open to get it hot in there. It did help the problem.

NOT normal and very bad for a pipe to freeze. Keep the heat up and call a plumber. You do NOT want that pipe to burst.

Any idea how it got so cold a pipe froze? Do you have an unfinished basement? Is it possible you don't have enough insulation?

Not normal. Do you know where the pipe is coming from?? You could take a hairdryer and run it where the area is freezing(that's if you know where it's happening). I agree with keeping your heat pumping today to try and prevent it from bursting.

I agree keep the heat up in the bathroom, even bring in a space heater if you can and do not turn the water on. The pressure will cause it to burst if you keep trying.
To prevent it from happening again I would run the water at night on a trickle. This is what we did and the one night we didn't in our kitchen, our pipe burst and the end result was a new kitchen.

Turning the faucet on doesn't cause pressure. Actually, it would reduce the pressure once the ice starts to melt a little, and the running water will assist the melting.

The water pressure is from the street to the ice blockage. The faucet is after the blockage, so it has absolutely no effect on the pressure on the pipe while it is frozen.

Are the pipes along an outside wall? Running in a crawlspace? There's some unheated area of the house that the pipes are running through causing the freeze. After you get this resolved, you need to address how and where the freezing occurred, and either add insulation, change some habits (leaving doors open, turning on space heaters, letting water trickle, etc).
