Added some photos...

I added some photos to my home progress album of some recent DIY stuff we did around the house if anyone is interested in checking it out...I figured I woudl share since it is all DIY stuff...

We painted our master bathroom walls and cabinetry a few months ago but decided it was time to frame out the large contractors mirror to match (I got a lot of suggestions to do it on here). DH also put in a shave mirror where the medicine cabinet used to be (love it for doing my hair and make up). What a difference!

In our kitchen the builders had put in a matching backsplash piece above the counter but it stopped behind the stove - it drove us crazy!!! We were hesistant to do anything with it b/c we figured that we would eventually upgrade the counters from corian to either granite or quartz.....but since new counters won't be in the budget for awhile (with so many OTHER projects to do!) we finally decided to just rip the backsplash piece off. YHL's blog inspired me when I saw them do the same in their master bathroom. It was a little tricky because we had to re-texture the wall (we have orange peel in FL) but it came out great. I am SO glad we did it (we were kicking ourselves for not doing it a year ago!!). A little change but it made a difference.

That is all...
Pics are at the end of my album...

It looks great Nik, would you mind sharing your framing tips? Do you guys have mitering saw? How did you cut the edges?

we got molding at Lowes....I think it was called casing? you can use anything really but I was looking for something that was wide and that I liked the design of...we do have a miter saw - DH made the cuts in about 10 minutes...then i painted. same paint i used for the cabinet. 3 coats. i also painted the back piece - just enough so that any reflection showing would be brown and not bare wood (that is important b/c when you put the wood against the mirror you can see the reflection of the back of the wood a little bit)....once it was dry we got heavy duty contractors glue - and this is the part where it's scary! Chat Icon starting with the bottom piece we put the glue on the back of the wood - make sure you put the glue at the furthest part of wood from the mirror b/c when you press it the glue will squish up and you don't want to see the glue's reflection in the mirror - or have it come up onto the mirror (we glued directly onto the mirror - if you glue onto the wall around the mirror you don't really have to worry about that so much). then we did the sides, the top piece last. we checked with a level to make sure we were straight before pressing the pieces firm. then after it was up for a few days i went back with spackle and filled in any open spaces in the corners. for whatever reason some of the corners had small spaces where they didn't meet pefectly. then once the spackle was dry i painted it.

the hardest part was attaching the pieces to the mirror - b/c it's awkward and the glue sets really quick. it was pretty easy to do but it took longer than they make it seem on TV...

Re: Added some photos...

You have inspired me to frame our mirrors... we've been wanting to do it for a while but have been putting it off. I hate them but I think they will look so much better with a frame, yours looks awesome now!

The kitchen looks great too and I happen to really like the counters. Chat Icon

Your home is gorgeous! Were you able to lay the new floors over the rug? I have ceramic and want to do it but do not want to go thru the mess of having tile taken up. Also I framed my mirror out also, but i used 4 medallions in the corners and cut the wood straight, came out nice. Just in case someone is looking for ideas.
