Need advice please- neighbor situation....WWYD?

Ok so DH and I moved into an apartment in July. We like it a lot. The only thing is the walls are VERY thin. In the living room we can hear one neighbor's TV and them talking, and in the bedroom we can hear another neighbor.

This is about bedroom neighbor. Short explanation - our building is in 3 wings with 3 separate elevators and halls that do not connect. Bedroom neighbor is the last apartment in the middle wing and we are the 1st apartment in the north wing, so we do not know them and do not run into them. From hearing them we have gathered that it is a couple with a (very loud) dog.

They are SO loud. We can hear every convo they have in whatever room our wall connects to word for word. Often we hear them very late at night and early in the morning. We hear their dog yap constantly. But the absolute WORST is some nights I get woken up by the man SNORING! I sleep with a fan, humidifier, noise machine AND earplugs (I'm a light sleeper) and I STILL get woken up to his SNORING! I don't think our wall connects to their bedroom because its not every night....but I don't know what to do. I've tried knocking on their door after work and nobody ever answers, and I am damn well not getting out of bed at 3am to go all the way downstairs, to the other elevator, and upstairs. (we live on the top floor) So when its really bad, like last night, I knock on the wall. Last night he knocked back and after that the snoring stops, but obviously they probably don't like us very much. I also wonder if they can hear every thing we do/say, so we are very conscious of that and try to stay quiet/watch the TV low in the bedroom. But since they don't try to keep it down it leads me to believe they DON'T hear us all that often...

I don't know what to do! If I do knock on their door, what do I say? "Your snoring bothers me"? I'm really at a loss here!! Any advice or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

I am in a similar situation...we live in a 2 family house that I'm guessing wasn't properly insulated in the floors against noise, because I hear every argument, every door slam, EVERYTHING.

I wish I had advice, but we just deal with it...I'm used to it now. They wake me up in the morning with their arguing (2 teenaged children getting ready for school) a couple of times a week...but I don't really know what to say to them, and I know if we hear them they must hear us, so it is what it is.

I had the same situation in my last apartment. I heard EVERYTHING my neighbors did or said or farted. I used a white noise machine. I whispered to DH because I didn't want the neighbors to listen to our conversations.

It's not the neighbors' fault -- it's the builder's fault for not properly soundproofing between apartments.

Someone else in the building demanded a sound test between apartments. Building code specifies how much you should be able to hear from unit to unit.

Ugh we have a tenant moving in in two weeks and I am DREADING this!!!! I'm so sorry you're dealing with that, it would just drive me insane. I'm a light sleeper too.

I would write them a letter and stick it under the door. If they don't stop after that, is there anyone you can complain to?

I soooo feel for you I am in the same situation...I live on a 1st flr of an attached house and the landlords live upstairs...we have been there for 2 1/2 years and in the beginning it was just one kid running around, but the walls are so thin it sounds like construction...They had another baby who is now 2 so I have 2 toddlers running over our heads and they dont run they stomp! I bang my broom, I text the LL...they apologize but its hard to control two toddlers.

Our bedroom is on the side of the Apt. where the house is attached and this crap house is made of cardboard...I would hear them yelling and at 7am they would blast the radio...I went knocking on the door one Saturday morning and said this is craz, they apologized and they moved out few months later...New ppl moved in and it sounded like someone was playing the keyboard at 6am this time knocked on the owner of the house and told them if they can tell their tenants to stop...

I CAN'T WAIT TO HAVE OUR OWN HOUSE!!!

If I were you I would slip a note under thier door if they dont answer.

You could leave a note about the TV and to make them aware that you can hear their conversations. I am not sure what you can do about the snoring since there's not much he can do about it either.

It's the unfortunate part of apartment living - I can hear the guy next door working in the kitchen, the woman on the other side get things out of her medicine cabinet, the dog downstairs bark, the guy upstairs open his closet doors and the kid over my neighbors apt run around.

Could you get one of those white noise machines? Just because ifthey are not purposely being loud and the walls are that thin, the only solution might be to drown it out somehow. I mean, you can write them a note or complain but really, especially the part about his snoring being heard - how can he snore more quietly? Imagine sleeping right next to it? LOL But seriously, I'd look into if those machines would drown out enough noise for you.
