We were talking about older houses in another thread
We have a steam heat system in our 80 year old house. Boiler is older but is efficient, water heater has a few more years on it and we get it reguarly maintained with our oil company. Plumbing recently upgraded.
We could never get all of the steam radaitors to work. Finally when we had Meenan oil come out to fix a hot water issue the tech told us about putting variable valves on all of the radiators. Who knew? We've had at least 5 "experts" come in to look at that issue and after 8 years we finally got it right.
Thanks to the tech at Meenan, our issue was fixed for $48 and now everything is working and I was able to lower my thermostat considerably. He said he would do it but it would have cost $125 for him to do it plus parts. He said just do it yourself. Nice guy.
We should be able to really save on oil now. We would have to jack up the thermostat considerably to get the house warm.
Just call me toasty.

Good for you! Its nice to have someone go the extra mile..
Can you tell me how the variable valves work? Does it work with a programmable thermostat? Do you set certain valves to be open all the time and not others? We have a steam heat system and looking to add extra loops that won't be on all the time.

Got them from HD. They are valves that screw onto the radiator and you can adjust them from fully open to 1/2 open to closed and anything in between.
We have the rooms that we are in the most full open, the foyer half, the office half, the kitchen half. You can adjust them anytime.
They were the cheap ones not Hoffman..those were $30 each, these were $8 each. If they break, I will just replace them. The ones we had on there were so old and they were fixed.
Yes, it works with any thermostat.
Steam heat systems are tricky but when they work right they are the best.
Now we have it set for 66-67 and it's warm. So happy.
