Need help decorating this!!! UPDATED 1/17 and updated again with another pic
so i had to remove my freestanding fireplace and I'm left with this empty space. I'm selling, so I don't want the expense to remove it and it leaves the option for them to put a new one if they choose to.
So I was thinking a large, long framed picture on the wall. Perhaps some large candle holders with candles and a full plant.
Thoughts? any pictures of plants or candles that might look good in this space? I need help fast!!!
Note its the first thing you see when you walk in.
Don't mind the toys or cat lol.
THANKS!!!

UPDATE OK so my DH wouldn't do the faux fireplace - so we did this. I think it looks ok for its purpose (remember we are just trying to sell the house), but it definitely needs something else. A plant??? What kind? any other ideas?

Update#2 How's this?

Re: Need help decorating this!!!
So you had one of those fire places that didn't need to be attached with a chimney-- can you replace it or was there an issue with having it there in the first place? If it is not a major expense, I would probably replace it since a lot of buyers love a fireplace. I understand that removing all of that stone work would probably be more expensive and create much more mess. Maybe find one on Craigs List?
My other thought was finding one of those antique stoves for decorative purposes-- doesn't need to work.
I think the ideas you mentioned are great if that's the route you want to go-- I would probably scour the home stores and get a bunch of things, you need to play around with what looks the best. Maybe some chunky pillar candles-- something that really fills the space.

Re: Need help decorating this!!!
they don't make free standing fireplaces anymore. The one we had worked, but it wasn't up to code and we were forced to remove it. We thought about putting a faux or electric fireplace there but won't it look cheesy on the stone? We can not put anything that needs a chimney on that ledge without causing a violation. The chimney was removed as well.
This is what WAS there. I actually really liked it.

I would def get one of those electric ones-- that's what I was talking about. I have seen them and they look nice. It's not the same as a real fireplace, but you are showing the potential of the space and I think because of your space-- it's obviously for a fireplace. If you didn't have the raised level, I htink you would have more flexibility with what you could do there.

Re: Need help decorating this!!!
what about buying just a mantle? people do this all the time, just have a decorative mantle. That way there is something in the space and if people want a fireplace in the future, the get a glimpse as to what it would look like. Craigslist always has some cute antique ones.

Re: Need help decorating this!!!
you know one other thing you can do, is get a seat cushion and some throw pillows and make it like a bench. From the second pic you posted it looks like it could work. But the seat/bench cushion would need to be the right size.
eta-- then hang some artwork or a mantle over it.

I would put a mantel with an electric fireplace in it, it may be $ now but its been proven that buyers love a nice fireplace in the room brings on a cozy feel & buyers could really see themselves relaxing in the room.

Re: Need help decorating this!!!
I would add a mantel and a candle centerpiece display on the hearth.
OR, do a lighted candle wall display hanging on the brick, and some throw pillows on the hearth.

Re: Need help decorating this!!!
i love the cushion/bench idea...
Also, i think I would put a mantle up and then buy one of these http://www.myfavoritethings.tv/gifts/furniture/electric_fireplaces/electric_fireplace_logs/electric_fireplace_crackling_heater_logs.shtml
and also maybe an inexpensive fire tool set and log bucket!

Re: Need help decorating this!!!
wow thanks for all the great ideas ladies!!!
My DH will NOT put a mantle or electric fireplace there. I've been trying to get him to do it for weeks, but he won't bend. We found a large (long and wide) framed mirror at Home Goods and some large candle stick pedastal holders. We kind of put it up there quickly to see and it look pretty good (not ideal, but not awful.) We still need a plant or something else - once we figure it out and get the mirror hung I will post pics.

It looks great. You can even do a big nice basket with magazines or extra pillows.
