Alarm Question
So we are finally getting around to installing our alarm... Anyway, I have the option of being connected to the phone line (alerts the monitoring station within 30 secs), or establishing some kind of wireless connection which alerts in 2 to 3 seconds-- and in the instance of an intruder cutting the phone line, we are still monitored.
Thoughts? Worth the extra money?

YES! Get it definitely worth the $ DH and I were out to dinner the first time our fire alarm went off (we had a puff back) thank god they could get through to our cell phones.

I don't know if thats the same thing..we don't have one and our alarm company has contacted us through our cell phone when there was no answer at home...we're thinking of doing this in the new house but not sure yet...

We have central monitoring through a phone line and they call our house and go down a list of numbers to reach us before calling the police. We have the 2nd and 3rd numbers listed as our cell phones. We also have something different where if the power is cut they will call our cell phones first. This is an additional monthly cost that we pay for.

Sorry-- maybe I needed to be more specific. This would be IF the phone line didn't work for some odd reason (an intruder cut the line or fire burned it or something). Since the monitoring with the alarm company is done over the phone line-- that's how they get alerted, this is extra back-up in case the phone line was cut.
I am sure we can leave multiple phone numbers for either service to be contacted if they are getting a break in or fire message from the house.

They are talking about wireless cellphone monitoring and yes it's worth it.
If they cut your phone lines, the security system will use the built in cellphone to dial the central monitoring station. The $12 a month is the service charge for it.
I have it on my security system. Must have IMO.

Just make sure you have a strong cell signal at the house.
Our alarm company sold the cell back-up to us as the best thing ever.....and even convinced us to have the cell signal serve as the main connection. Little did we know, we have no cell service here. The alarm went off almost hourly until a tech could get back out here to re-program the system.

DH is an alarm tech and he told me about a story he read about. This girl had voice ip and something happened to her connection. I don't know if the power went out or the modem lost power or whatever, but her ex broke in, the alarm NEVER went off (since it was basically an internet connection) and he killed her current bf and tortured her. It was the kind of story that if she had a land line or another kind of back up, she would have probably lived b/c the police would have been contacted.
Basically, after hearing that, I think having some kind of back up connection would be smart. I don't know if it applies to the kind of service you'd be getting, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
