Bathroom question with poll

I'm going to be adding a master bath to my bedroom but its going to be tiny. Big enough for toilet, vanity and shower (no tub) and no window.

What are the advantages of having tile on the bathroom walls? Is it a PITA to clean?

Do you think any of the above options would make the bathroom appear bigger?

Any other tips in making it look bigger?

I put wainscotting in a small bathroom and completely regret it, I love the look of it but its such a pita to clean, it gets dust in every little groove. I'd much rather have tile or just plain walls. The only reason I'd do tile though is since you have a shower in there for moisture issues. Otherwise the condensation will be running down your walls after you shower, even if you have a ventilation system from my experience.

from my experience, you are screwed no matter what when it comes to bathrooms and walls....whether it be tile, wallpaper, regular paint, wainscotting, etc.

i always have fuzzies and it drives me nuts. literally. I would probably stay away from tile, just because I know what a pain it is already to keep the floor fuzzy-free.

eta: i love the look of wainscotting though.......

The look of wainscotting is beautiful but I prefer tile.

I would put the wainscot in a non-shower bath and use a glossy-ish paint.


EVERYTHING sticks to the walls due to the moisture but I've found that cleaning the tiles is not an issue.

I love the look of wainscotting as well, but I decided on plain walls and don't regret it.

I swiffer the walls once a week.

I am not a fan of tile all around the room because it's permanent. If I want to change the color in the bathroom it's easy to paint and make the room look different.

I'm doing wainscotting in a half bath no showe or tub. My contractor recommended it to me and not to do that in any bathroom with a shower or tub bc of condensation, he said tile holds up better

We have the same set-up in our master. A very tiny bathroom (that used to be a closet) with a large shower, vanity and toilet. We have the shower area and shower ceiling tiled and a little border outside of the shower. The rest of the room is painted. BUT, what does annoy me is that the area above the vanity gets splashed with water all the time and the grouting gets cracked, so what I should have done is half tile that wall only. Next time...

Our bathroom walls were tiled when we moved in. Besides the color not matching, they always look dirty to me, and the grout lines are really thick, and the grout is white. I feel like the grout brush should just be attached to my hand, I hate the tiles. When we renovate it, I'm taking a sledgehammer to the tiles myself!

We tiled everything in the shower, including the ceiling. Our walls are tiled have way up as well. I prefer it and we intend to remodel our main bathroom the same way.

No moisture/condensation issues in our bathroom because of our exhaust fan and the way our shower was designed. It's a very small bathroom and we don't even get fog on the mirror. I'll have to post a photo to show you the design.

I inherited wainscoting & hate it.

I don't think it was painted properly & the area nex to the tub & behind the toilet have water damage.

I am planning to re-do & would probably tile half way, just to have something to add some interst to the wall, but my parents did just plain painted walls in a small bath & that looks good too.

We just installed wainscoting in the bathroom. It's a moisture resistant material -- not wood. Although bathroom vanities and cabinets are wood and those seem to hold up just fine...

Not sure if it makes our small bathroom look any bigger, but it definitely makes it look a lot better. It's a more casual, cottage-y look than tile.

I have plan walls and tiles in the shower only. I hate tiles anywhere in the bathroom & shower UNLESS they are the large tiles. Grout drives me INSANE!!!!

They probably used the wrong type of wainscoting. The stuff that is made for bathrooms is double the price then the wood stuff you use in other parts of the house

i have a small bathroom with a shower and the walls are painted. it is terrible!!!!!!!!!!!! we have no window and a weak exhaust fan (i think its weak). i scrub the walls 1mo (should do it more). you see all the dip/condesation lines, its disgusting and embarassing. cant wait to rip it out, pop in a window, and tile the entire thing this summer :)

I would go with tile. I have plain walls now and it's such a PITA. My old bathroom was all tile and I regret not doing that again when we re-did it.
