Has anyone ever grown Wheatgrass?

Just wondering how long it takes for the seeds to sprout & can you use any type of container for planting?

Are you planning to use it for pets, juicing, or another purpose?

I'd like to grow it & use it as a centerpiece & stick cake pops within the grass Chat Icon I can't find a pic & know it sounds crazy but I'm picturing a really cute idea in my mind...

That actually sounds very cute! I usually buy a bit of it already grown and in soil @ Wild By Nature sometimes, but have always been curious myself as to how to grow it. From what I hear, it is very easy to grow.

I found this online, I hope it helps.

Step 1
Sprout the seeds in water for 6 to 12 hours. (Optional: Use a LITTLE bit of food grade H2O2 in the water to increase the amount of seeds which will sprout.)

Step 2
Mix organic top soil with peat moss (50/50 mix) and place in a seed or cafeteria tray. (I purchase seed trays at K-Mart and cafeteria trays at Big Lots. Sometimes I find recycled seed trays at gardening centers for free.) The soil/peat moss mix should be 1 1/2 to 2 inches deep.

Step 3
Drain the seeds and spread them over the soil. The seeds should be touching each other but not overlapping.

Step 4
Lightly sprinkle peat moss over the seeds to cover them.

Step 5
Water the tray being careful to not distrub the peat moss and seeds.

Step 6
Keep the trays in indirect sunlight for about 7 to 10 days and continue watering as needed.

hmm, maybe I'll just buy it to save myself a headache just in case I ruin the plant. Do you remember if it's expensive to buy? I'll check out Hicks Nursery this week.

It is a bit pricey, IMO, for the little amount you get. It is not a tray; it is more of a 4x4 inch "lot". Hicks Nursery probably has it for much cheaper, I would assume. Perhaps call them before you go.

DH and I were just talking about it. My grandmother used to grow it but she's not around to ask anymore. It's soooo healthy.

Re: Has anyone ever grown Wheatgrass?

wheatgrass is supposed to have amazing health benefits, among them increased immunity. If you feel a cold coming on or anything take wheatgrass shots every day for 3-4 days and you can ward it off! Stuff is amazing I want to look into getting it frozen but it doesn't keep all of the health benefits.

Re: Has anyone ever grown Wheatgrass?

I tried to grow it last year for centerpieces for a party I was having and I didn't have much luck. It was very spotty in places. Hopefully yours will come out much better!
