spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

I have to say DH is very supportive of my healthy eating habits. I used to think he was sabatoging my diet efforts, but then I realized I can make my own decisions about food (even if it means telling him I DONT want to go out to dinner!)

He's also a big supporter of my running.

One thing he doesn't support is me lifting weights, seeing a personal trainer, and gaining more muscle. He doesn't like that my arms are muscular and doesn't want my abs to be tight. He doesn't like muscles on a woman. Chat Icon

Re: spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

DH is very supportive. He completely encourages me to eat well and works out.

I am slightly concerned about one thing. I have hit my goal weight 1x in my life before I met DH but he has seen pics of me and tells me I was too skinny and he didnt like it.

I have come close to the goal weight (right before the wedding) I was just about 10 lbs shy and he started to say I was too skinny. It kinda annoyed me b/c I checked w/my Dr and 125 for a 5'4 chick w/a medium build is right on target. Its going to take a lot of hard work to get down to the weight and I hope he dosent complain. He has told me that he likes nice "fit"curves...whatever that means.

Missfab....has your DH explained why he isnt supportive of the trainer, muscle tone, etc?

He doesn't think muscles are feminine. He thinks its a 'manly' thing to have muscles.
Honestly, I think he'd be happy if i gained 5-10lbs, but I'm happy the way I am.
I think some men just prefer women with curves. When DH met me I was about 50lbs heavier.

Colleen, good question!!! I have to stay positive, in spite of DH. He doesn't understand diabetes, and the associated weight issues. Sometimes he's the food police, which I don't appreciate. Mary

Re: spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

he makes fun of me, but usually he is supportive.

last night for example: he was coming home from an appointment, and i sent him a message that he could bring me home a "present." usually in my language that means ice cream, or something sweet. he knows i've been trying to revamp my diet, and since dairy makes me sick i shouldn't be eating it anyways. soooo...last night he brings home dairy free ice cream bars, and fresh fruit.

he's a little too good to me sometimes!

Re: spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

My DH is VERY supportive. When I first started WW, he went out and bought me a TON of the WW Smart Ones foods to help me out........especially the cookie dough sundae that he knows I love so much Chat Icon

Unfortunately, after I lost all of my weight and got comfortable, so did he. So he started bringing junk food back in the house. Of course it was meant for him, but he knows I can't stay away from it, lol.

Now he's looking to lose some weight himself, so we're both completely back on track and working at our weight loss together.

Re: spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

He knows I want to lose weight, but he's also a soft heart when it comes to me...so if I want something like dessert or a greasy meal, he'll remind me of my feelings about losing weight, but then he'll agree to come with me or get me what I want....he's my enabler, its no good.

Re: spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

Diet: hurts. He can eat whatever he wants and not gain weight, and doesn't want to change his eating habits just because I can't do the same. But then I find it difficult to eat well when we have temptation in the house.

Exercise: helps. I've become an extremely active person since knowing him. He's been a great influence on me when it comes to exercise, and he's very encouraging.

Re: spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

I would not have been able to lose the weight I've lost without DH's support. He does not bring in any junk food and has changed his eating habits based on what I eat. He never complained once about the change in meals that we had and does not say anything about us going out less. He's actually loved all the changes because our meals are more routine now and we are saving so much money by not going out 4-5 times a week. We used to spend at least $200 a week in going out for meals. Now we spend maybe $50 a week, unless a birthday is involved.

As far as exercising, I go in the morning and DH takes care of getting the kids up and makes them breakfast every morning. His support is so much more then I ever could have imagined. But he loves the benefits of all of it!!!

Re: spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

Workout wise - he helps. He has no problem coming straight home from work so I can go to Zumba, or taking care of the kids for me on a Sunday morning.

Food wise - we are both bad. We like to take the boys out to restaurants and you know how it goes with healthy choices there. But, when I'm on a diet I only buy healthy things, and cook healthy, so he eats better too!

Re: spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

hmmmm....huge enabler. I have to believe he just doesn't get it.

He eats and eats all day long, anything. 32 waist.

Last night we were in car together for 1.5 hours total.
He had 2 orders of wings, 2 doughnuts and starbucks.

i sat there and watched. He knows I am counting points....so I would think he would just wait till we got home.

Working out...He is less then thrilled to watch the baby. Encourages me to sneak her into the gym with me and entertain her while I am working out. That's not just working out though, that is my life. He hates being home with her and I hate leaving her with him...he isn't very good at it. If I do go out, anywhere, I am usually called home.

so...no, he isn't good at it at all.

Re: spinoff: Does your DH help or hurt your diet/fitness?

He's okay. With the diet, he'll cooperate if I want to make a healthy dinner & give me words of encouragement, like if I tell him "I want this but I'm not really hungry" he'll tell me not to eat it which helps. But sometimes he pressures me to go out to eat or buy ice cream/chips when I'd rather not have the temptation around. As for exercise, he'll go to the gym with me & work out & motivate me. But if he's not in the mood to go we usually end up not going (I don't have the motivation to go by myself usually). Also he'll rush through his workout & then I feel rushed to finish up if I want to go longer. But for the most part we set exercise goals together & work out together so that helps me a lot.
