Why does getting a permit take so LONG
I'm trying to sell my house and unfortunately for me I got s c rewed and bought a house that needs 4 co's/permits. So I applied for 2 of the permit 3 weeks ago and haven't heard from them. So I called today and asked the status and they said "its in the pile" try calling again in a week. Seriously, it's a permit to retain what the other people did and take down a wall that they put up illegally. I have someone willing to do the work, but they are going to start another job if I don't get this permit soon. 
and why didn't they tell me I needed to call. I assumed they'd call when it was done. Lazy!!

I am surprised the previous owners did not have to provide the co themselves when they sold their house.
Did you buy the house and agreed to the co discrepancies?
Some owners have huge problems with co, especially after the facts. This is why so many sale of houses fall through.
Some permits take MONTHS, especially if you need/needed a variance. Depends on your township also.

We only knew about the 1 wall that needed to come down. When I applied for that the others came up. I applied for the 2 that I can handle, the other 2 are so expensive to rectify I'm not sure what to do yet.

w bought a house that needed co's. the previous owners said it took them 8 months WITH an expediter doing the work
they needed 3 one of which was a major thing
you should look into hiring an expediter if your in a rush
Also- I've heard from a friend who works closely with that dept that they process co's first if the work hasn't been done yet. if its existing work, its not priority. I know they aren't allowed to work like that, but its sort of an un-said way of working

I don't think they exist where i live. My brother is from LI and he paid $1500 for his and still had trouble. So he suggested I do the same, but I can't find one up here. I called my RE attorney, broker, etc and nobody knows of one.

one room is to retain work previously done and the other is work that needs to be done. So I'm a mixed bag
I just find it frustrating that they don't call you (and don't tell you that) and when I asked how much longer - when should I try calling again - he said "i don't know, it's in the pile."
I even sat with the actual inspector and he approved my plans and said it wouldn't be a problem, but I had to wait until I got the permit to take down the wall and build a closet.

it may not be overnight but it will still be quicker then not using one
where do you live?
