I need Christmas tree help
Can somebody please tell me exactly HOW you decorate your tree? I feel like my tree always looks like a child decorates it. I look at pictures of other peoples' trees and they are so beautiful and I just don't know what I do wrong.

I don't know if it is right or wrong but after lights go on I start with my solid color large christmas balls. Then I move to my medium size then small. Then I fill in with my decorative ornaments. This works for me.

we do all the balls first too and then finish up with our other ornaments. im not crazy about the way the tree came out this year. for next year i want to get a new topper and some pretty ribbon to use as garland.

If I were doing it would look like a 4 yr old did it 
DH puts all the lights and beads on first. He is meticulous and good at it.
Then we do the ornaments together.
The key IMO is getting the lights and beads (if you do them) on straight HTH

There is no right or wrong with a tree.
Ours probably looks like a child did it since we just have a collection of ornaments, no theme.
I do use ALOT of lights and ALOT of ornaments. I don't like a bare tree.

I LET my DC decorate the tree (at least most of it. I even pick them up to put things higher up). Unless it's in the White House, a Christmas tree should reflect the family. While I like to look at very formal trees, I love the fact that our tree is a hodgepodge of decorations, ornaments, strings of beads, homemade ornaments, etc. DC even make decorations out of twist ties and paper during the month and hang them.

Same here. Except I do small to large. (but that doens't matter lol) We bought the set from costco last year. This is the first year we did it this way and it worked out pretty well.
ETA: the tree looked amazing but it wasn't "us" till we put our ornaments up (our baby ornamnets, things I made growing up, team ones)

There is no right or wrong!
Me, I like to have a "base coat" on my tree the base is lights, beads and red balls. I like the consistent look this gives:
Lights-out tree is prelit, so done!
Bead garland-strings of wooden red beads.
Red Ball ornaments-big shatter proof red ball ornaments I bought at walmart, some are glitter some are plain.
Then we put on all of our personalized ornaments, ornaments we have collected over the years, ornaments the kids have made etc.
If I'm doing bows, I put them on after all the ornaments.
Then the star.

They're too close together, and they just look "messy". I'm not undecorating the tree this year, but next year I'm gonna try the system of lights, beads, balls THEN personalized stuff. I did the personalized stuff first then tried to fill in with the balls (we omitted the beads this year. But we did do big bows placed far into the tree near the trunk to fill in bare spots. Also, I forget what kind of tree we got (either Douglas Fir or Frasier Fir) but the branches are really weak and even the lightest ornaments pull them down plus DH says the tree has a lot of "cowlicks"!
Thanks everybody for your tips, I'm gonna put them to good use next year.

I get where you're coming from too. I actually left on a strand of beads that my 4 year old literally THREW on. I just figured, why not?
