Adding Rice Cereal to Formula
I just added rice cereal to formula for spitting up as per my ped. Does it work right away with the spitting up or does it take a couple of bottles? My DS spits up all day long. Not a lot comes out but he spits up for hours after he eats I feel like I can never put him down. I know he is not spittng up from too much formula because he is only getting 4 1/2oz every 4 hours

my son doesn't really have a prob, but occas he spits up. I notice he doesn't spit up with the cereal. So it should work right away.

Honestly, it should work instantly. I do not recommend putting rice cereal in the bottle for many reasons.
It changes the nutrient profile - adding excessive carbohydrates, calories and decreased protein. It also changes babies sucking mechanism and babies gut may be too immature to properly digest. It also only thickens the formula in the bottle.
I would recommend using a product like enfamil AR before trying rice cereal or medications. It has the same nutrient profile as regular formula, flows through regular nipple and thickens when in the stomach, not the bottle. It is not always 100% successful, but you will know upon first bottle. Spit up should be dramatically decreased.
Babies with extreme spit up will prob. have to have cereal and medication, but I would try an easier solution first.

It shouild work right away. We tried Enfamil AR first for reflux, and it's definitely thicker than regular formula. DD's spitting up decreased noticeably, but it still happens every once in a while.

i don't understand why doctors still recommend to add rice cereal to bottles you would think they would know better. people in my family keep telling me to do it, and i refuse! hello, this is why we have such a high incidence of childhood obesity!!!!! the enfamil AR is great because it uses the rice in a way that makes it nutritionally balanced.

It usually works pretty much right away, but it may take a few bottles if there is still left over in the tummy from the previous bottles.
We actually found the Similac Sensitive R.S. to work better than adding the cereal to the bottle. Enfamil also makes the A.R. which both have the added rice starch and we noticed a difference within the first day or so. DD still spit up, but not nearly as much.

Works right away
As far as the other poster recommending Enfamil AR, my DS is on a lactose free/hypoallergenic formula so that is not an option for us.
