How to tip garbage men....
if you never ever see them. They do a great job for us all year and we want to tip. Last year they gave us a post card to send anything if we wanted to a PO Box, but they didn't do that this year. I am thinking someone complained about it... so how on earth do I tip if I never see them?

I cannot believe they sent you a PO box to send them a gift last year. That is beyond tacky!
I've heard people walk around stealing the taped cards off the cans so I wouldn't do that. Aside from giving it in person, I'm not sure

Are you home when they come by? You can leave a note to ring the bell or say check the mailbox or open storm door etc.

Nope, not at all. DH leaves before they come and I am home, but getting ready for work. I'd never hear the bell... Is it very very terrible to not give?

my husband and i were just discussing this. the only thing we came up with is that he was going to wake up early and give it to them in person, but i know that might not work for everyone. i don't feel comfortable leaving it in or near the garbage can. sorry i'm not more help!

I try to see them in person (which is tough because they aren't consistent as to when they arrive).
I have taped it to the lid of the can before though... Or given it to my neighbor to give htem.

That wouldn't stop the theft issue, though. The thief would just read the note and take from the mailbox. Plus, I think it's *technically* a federal offense to go into a mailbox that isn't yours.

Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits any mailable matter such as statements of accounts, circulars, sale bills, or other like matter, on which no postage has been paid, in any letter box established, approved, or accepted by the Postal Service for the receipt or delivery of mail matter on any mail route with intent to avoid payment of lawful postage thereon, shall for each such offense be fined under this title.

HISTORICAL AND REVISION

1994 - Pub. L. 103-322 substituted "fined under this title" for "fined not more than $300".

Well now I have an answer, DH just texted me saying we got the post card with the place to send the tip ! I know some might think this is tacky, but they really do a great job for us so for me I do not mind one bit.

You can call the dept of sanitation. If you give them your address they can tell you the truck number. Our guys give us a holiday card with their truck number. This way we can send in a card with tip and it will be given to them. I am lucky to be hoe all day. My kids stalk the garbage men so we have no trouble getting them their tip. I swear they even stall in front of my house each day to give the kids time to get to the window to wave
