Spinoff to renting out your house.
Those of you that do it, do you have it listed through the town that it's a rental?
Edited to claify: I meant, does the town know you are renting out your house. I live in Brookhaven town and saw on their website paperwork that needs to be filed to rent our your home.

We know a family that lives in the Hamptons year round and for the summer would rent out the house. They would rent an apartment or tiny bungalow. They always used an REA.
The renters paid the rent and what ever gas/electric they used while they were there.

I guess I didn't ask the question right.

I was just wondering what happens if you don't do this. What kind of fines you can be hit with if they find out.

Sure you SHOULD let the town know. BUT unless someone reports you, how will they know. I know the people who live across the street rent their house out. Basement and top part of the house. I dont care. Just keep it cleN and quiet im good.

Yeah...see...there's 1 neighbor I worry about. He's a huge PIA!
Although, the people across the street from me are renting the house and it hasn't been an issue.

Are you renting out part of your house or the entire house?
I have rental prop and if you are renting out the entire house, so long as it's only a single family residing in your single family dwelling then there is NO reason anyone should create a problem..
When you have multiple families occupying a single family dwelling, that's when you come into problems with the neighbors, town, etc.

the only thing you have to do is remove your star exemption if you rent out your house - because the homeowner is not living there - so if you don't you could owe back taxes for the star exemption difference plus interest
