Questions about STAR
We bought our house in June and will be applying for the STAR discount prior to the January 2011 deadline. If we are approved (don't see why we wouldn't be) when does this all go into effect and when do we see any benefit from it? And what would that benefit be? Would our mortgage payments actually decrease?

it won't go into effect until the next tax year. They will continue giving the the same deduction/exemption the previous owners of the houe got. It too 2 years for them to figure us out... so we kept getting the enhanced star since the were seniors  they finally got it right this year

NYS STAR Exemption
Be sure to check with your local tax assessor's office as to when the actual application is due. Every county is different with the due dates. Call the assessor's to confirm.

Remember also that in Nassau you have to submit your application with a copy of your deed. This isn't necessary in Suffolk.
If you're submitting by mail, send it certified mail return receipt requested.
Oh and Nassau prefers that you use THEIR form not the NYS form (even though both are acceptable).
