Scariest moment of my life
DD choked whild DH & I were eating dinner. She was eating a cookie in the baby safe feeder. We are not really sure what happened. I think she shoved it too far into her throat and then when she started choking, she panicked. I looked over at her and her face was bright red, her eyes were huge and watery. She had this look of desperation, fear, and panic that is burned into my brain. I pulled the safe feeder out of her mouth, I think. It all happened so fast. I ripped her out of the Highchair. Turned her over, and pounded on her back. She was still red as anything. DH called 911 as I was doing this. Thank god when I sat her up she was breathing. I think she was more confused and startled than anything. She didn't even cry. It was so scary, and I can't shake it. She did great w the safe feeder with banana but that she couldn't choke herself with bc it is soft. I used the feeder b/c the 1st time I gave her a cookie it broke and I had to fish out a piece. I was scared she would choke. No more cookies. They are in the trash. EMS showed up w/ about 10 ppl. I was embarresed b/c by then she was fine. I feel like such a bad mommy. Like it is my fault this happened. I was too busy eating dinner talking to DH while she was in her chair. I don't know how long she was choking before I noticed. I feel like if I was paying more attention it wouldn't have happened. Thank god she is fine. What would be something nice to drop off at the fire Dept? Wanted to say thanks. Coffee, donuts?

Re: Scariest moment of my life
how scary!
Loey has had issues with choking and unfortunately, it's become somewhat "routine" in our house for me or DH to have to do "baby heimlich" on him!
It's so scary though to see that look on the baby's face. Hopefully this is the last time that happens for you guys!!!!
ANY gift at all would be nice... that's very sweet of you!

Re: Scariest moment of my life
very scary glad she is okay
Just wanted to throw it out there, The way it sounds to me, it might not be chocking that got her to stop breathing. DS holds his breath when he's very scared or paniced. Like falls from trying to walk, he holds his breath for a good 10 seconds, eyes have the look of fear, swell up with tears, and then only he screams. I read in "what to expect in the first year" that its normal and some babies even go unconcious, and recover normally. Bring it up with your ped, its on our list to discuss with our ped too. I freak out when he holds his breath.

Re: Scariest moment of my life
I'm sorry that happened. I know how scary it is, but isn't your fault. They are experimenting and learning, unfortunately it happens. And it only takes an instant for them to get all red like that. DD was eating a cracker on Tuesday, same kind she has had many times before and the same thing happened. That look on their face is awful. I pulled her from her seat, flipped her over and gave her a whack or 2. Once she was upright she tried to shove the rest of the cracker still clenched in her fist into her mouth. This one is giving me grey's

Re: Scariest moment of my life
choking can happen to anyone. and you did the right thing by not panicking and flipping her over. DH just finished CRP trraining and I will take the class at its next offering FOR THIS REASON. so we are prepared if DH chokes or hurts himself.
you're entitled to eat dinner and talk to your DH. dont beat yourself up.
thank god everyone is ok!!

Re: Scariest moment of my life
What was she exactly choking on? If the cookie was in mesh feeder, she may have been just choking on extra saliva. DS did that when he spit up when he was younger. So scary...Glad she is ok...When I was in the local fire department/ems, we would receive checks (which were returned) and gift certificates to Dunkin Donuts...
