Spinoff to the cesspool post.
Our old home was connected to sewers. Our new house has a cesspool. It is probably about a 40 year old house.
We don't even know where the cesspool is! How can we find out??

If you have a company come to service it they should be able to find it fairly easily. Do you have a basement? They should be able to see where the pipe exits the house to the yard. They use a metal rod, pushing it into the ground to locate the cover of the cesspool.

Yeah, we didn't know where our caps were exactly, either. They just poked around the lawn with a metal rod for a few minutes and found them easily.

correct, and if they cant find it, they flush a device down the toilet, which has a tracking signal on it and they follow it until they find where it ends up. That of course is more expensive.
Also, ours was not on our survey.

bizarre question but don't they usually have a lid with a opening? My friend had the last cesspool in the village and that is what she had because i remember playing around it and we would dare each other to throw stuff down it (yes stupid kids)

yes it has a lid but its covered by dirt and grass. We cant see our cover. Maybe it was sewers and not a cesspool

ours is not on our survey so you may not be able to go based on that
if you have a basement you can see the direction in which the pipe runs to know front yard vs back yard
this was the #1 question we asked the day we went to the walk thru and the previous owner showed DH exactly where they were otherwise we would have had to hire a compnay to come out and find them. (they use a long pole and poke holes in your grass to try and locate it)

It wasn't so easy to find mine with poking holes. They found two, and one was underneath my driveway and a huge Maple tree. The other one was underneath a huge Elm tree. 
The cap on my new one is closed, and under dirt. We put grass seed down and it doesn't grow in one circular section. I'm assuming that's where the cap is, because it's been a few years and I forgot exactly where it was.
