Anybody ever use fabric for wall covering?

Anybody ever use fabric for wall covering?
I have this room upstairs with completely outdated wallpaper. I can't rip it and replace the drywall. I know if I try to remove the wall paper it will rip the whole drywall.
So I was thinking to get some "cheap" fabric and hang it. Either loose (like curtains) or stappled (hidden staples).
Anyone has seen it done? Did it themselves, etc...
Any tips?
ETA: This is a room with a slopped ceiling.

I covered one wall in DS room in dennim. The wall is covered in dark brown cork. I was afraid to try and pull it down. It worked out well use an electric stapler and cardboard upholstery strips so you get clean edges.
