When it's time to paint in your house ....
Just curious.... I'm always shocked at the prices on this board for painters.
We always paint ourselves.

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
If it was just a room here and there, we might do it ourselves. But for a large job that's just impossible for us to do without either taking forever or making a mess, we like to hire a professional if the budget allows.

When we had our addition done, and we added about 1500 s/f, I hired someone. I'm currently painting our dining room and kitchen myself, since it's much more manageable.

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
We paint when we need to. I don't see the need to hire a painter when it's something we can do ourselves. I'd rather save the money.
Painting is super easy. We both paint... I even paint. I enjoy it.
If I could do ALL the home improvements, I would!

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
After the construction was done on our house, I got a few prices to paint the inside. The cheapest was $6000 and the most expensive was from Walker who wanted $8500.
In the end I bought all of the BM paint, and other supplies and painted the whole house myself. Danielle painted two rooms and I did the rest, since I was out of work and had the time. The house came out great and everything cost me $600

The majority of the painting I did. DH's friend is a professional painter and he did our upstairs hallway, the hallway for the stairs and our front living room.

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
We are doing it all ourselves -- every room, every piece of moulding, every bit of trim. It's easy and I love doing it myself, but it takes so much time. I completely understand how others would be willing to pay a professional.
ETA: We also need to paint the ceilings on the first floor but will be hiring someone. 12 foot ceilings - I can't reach!

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
hiring professionals. it is too much for us to do ourselves with our work schedules, plus we're messy, and our walls need TLC from years of wallpaper, paint, painted over wallpaper, wallpaper over painted over wallpaper... and so on and so forth.
and honestly, as much as I actually enjoy painting (we're painting the basement ourselves and i'm super excited), i'd rather shoot myself than paint the ceilings.

I painted our whole house when we bought it. Dh friend is a painter and was going to give us a deal, for $425 a day. I did it for A LOT less.

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
I also want to add to my above post, I use a professional b/c I want a perfect job, one that my DH nor I could ever do. I can't stand a crappy looking paint job and no matter how good we could do it, it could never be on the scale of a true professional.

DH's co-workers have offered to come in and take care of it for us since DH's injury. AMAZING group of guys. If it wasnt for them then we would have to do it.

We did it all ourselves. Though we are thinking about doing the outside of the house, which we'd hire someone to do.

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
I do not see the point in hiring a painter unless I had double hight ceilings then maybe I would consider it.
If I can lay hardwood floors I sure as heck can paint a wall.

We do it ourselves.
We have one room that when we repaint in there, we'll have to hire. Its the middle room in a splanch and the ceilings go SO high, there is no way we'd be able to do it.

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
I want to do it now-not because it needs to be done, but because I have changed my mind about the wall color. It is 5 years now and it still looks brand new. Because my BILs own a construction business, their employees take care of any house rennovations/painting/plumbing/electrical we want done. However it does not mean it can get done when we want-just when they have downtime. Sometimes that means in a week or a few months. If we hired someone else, we would never hear the end of it, so we wait-free labor and supplies! It is not an emergency-and when it is, they are there right away.

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
We painted our entire house ourselves, with the help of family. We did hire a maintence worker and his BIL from my dad's job to come and help us. We all split up into rooms and painted for a few weekends.
3 weeks ago I repainted my kitchen myself while DS was in preschool or napping. It took 2 days. The 3rd day I recaulked my moldings in the entire house where needed (it shrunk since we 1st did it last year) and then a few days later I repainted the base moldings in 3 of my rooms and on 14 door moldings. We were in such a rush at the end before we moved in that some of the moldings only had 2 coats of paint, were attached to the wall, caulked and never touched up, so I just went over everything.
I love to paint and can make a mean straight line.

Re: When it's time to paint in your house ....
When I bought my condo (bought it new) they wanted over $2k to paint it. My DH & I did it.. and even though it took a week all I had to do was pay for the paint & some beer!

most of it we did ourselves- although for our nursery my MIL did it and she did a better job than any professional I've ever seen- so she'll do it from here on in!
