General question about CO's

I have no idea if our "finished" basement has a CO or if it even needs one. There is no bathroom. Would we need to if we want to get a bathroom?

This never came up when we were buying the house...

We found out when we did renovations that our finished basement should have had a CO. It's considered living space so it needs a certificate of occupancy. We had to have a self-closing door with a metal backing between the finished side and the furnace. The underside of the stairs needed to be sealed off, and the furnace needed sheetrock above it on the beams. Basically it was fire safety stuff - if the furnace should catch fire it was designed to delay the smoke and flames from getting into the "living space" so people had time to get out. We also had to have a railing or wall on the stairs above a certain height - I think 18". It was open to about 3 feet and we needed to have something to protect anyone from falling off the stairs.

Seems like everything you do on Long Island requires a CO. i think if you contact the town hall they can verify and answer all your question. it maybe different depending on the town you live in.
