Why does only one house on a block have no tree near the sidewalk?
I am hopefully going into contract on a house this week. Every house on the block has a tree on the strip of land between the sidewalk and street except for our house. Also, on the block across the street from us, every house has a tree on the strip except for the house directly opposite our house.
Any ideas why there would be no trees for only those 2 houses? A pipe or something?

Re: Why does only one house on a block have no tree near the sidewalk?
On my block, I'm one of the only houses that has no trees in front. Recently, the town took down the trees b/c the roots were lifting the sidewalk. The sidewalk was replaced and we were given the option of whether we wanted them to replace the trees. We decided we didn't want new trees b/c we were worried about the new sidewalk and the leaves were SO messy. We have plenty of trees in the backyard (and leaves!) so it doesn't bother us. The town told us to contact them in the future if we change our mind and want trees. If you are interested in getting trees, maybe call the town?

Re: Why does only one house on a block have no tree near the sidewalk?
Are there power lines running through the same area? I've seen how they butcher the trees by power lines, and a lot of trees are not resilient enough to survive year after year.
I love the look of a tree-lined street too but I wouldn't replant on the strip between the sidewalk and the pavement. It's town property and the roots can cause problems too. Trees will be more healthy if the roots are under dirt and grass instead of pavement.

By the way, there's a free service where a homeowner can have all their utility pipes flagged so you know exactly where they enter the property from the street. I don't think they'd remove a tree for that though. I have a gas line coming into my house and it's flanked between two mature trees.

Thanks everyone.
How do I get that service?
