Can someone explain please? (Molding Q)
Our prospective painter said we need to have the molding done before the floors get sanded and stained.
Our floor guy said we should really do the floor first.
What gives? Does it REALLY make a difference?
It seems to me that the molding gets painted before it gets put on, anyway, so why would you put it on before painting the rest of the wall, or doing the floor?
Help!! We are so clueless!

I would Paint the walls then do the floors then install the moldings and then paint the moldings.
The problem with that is the painter will not want to make trips back after the floor is done. But if you paint before the floor you run the risk that the moldings will get banged up.

We always do moldings last, and normally in the order above...

thanks everyone. i thought it was weird to do the moldings first. FTR the molding guy and the paint guy are 2 different ppl, and we're def. doing the floors first.

yeah the problem though is the walls should be painted then the floors then the molding guy installs the molding then the painter has to make a trip back to paint the moldings......since he has to make a separate trip he is going to charge you more.
Can you just paint the moldings yourself......its very easy and not worth the money IMO to pay someone to do it for you.

we're having the floors done first regardless. i don't know why we're having someone do the molding, this didn't come up until a painter came in yesterday and said we needed to have our molding done first. dh and i are both totally confused so i guess we'll have to look into it more tonight or tomrrow. meh.

This is what we did. But, is your painter painting the mouldings or is the moulding guy painting them?
We painted the walls ourselves, then installed the floors, then had the moulding guy come and he installed/sanded/patched/painted the mouldings (base and crown).

 It's okay! You learn a lot by owning a home, that's for sure! It is nailed to the wall, but then you have to cover the nail holes and then sand and paint so everything is even. Make sense?

We can certainly paint ourselves but are choosing not to. I have the patience but not the time, DH has the time but not the patience. We need to move in by November 1, and it's not going to happen if we do it ourselves. The walls need extra attention from having painted-over wallpaper then wallpapered over, then spackled and painted over. We began peeling off the wall paper to find an endless nightmare of layers. We've owned the house for only 4 days lol!
We have the floors being done starting tuesday. It takes the longest time start to finish (including drying time) and since we want to be moved in at the end of the month, it was the most efficient course of action.

If possible, I would paint the molding before installing it. It comes out so much better that way. Even the best professional can't get behind the molding if it's installed first. Yes, you need to touch up the molding again after it's installed, but touching up is easier than painting. All the molding I've done before installation looks much better than the molding that was painted by a very good professional who had to paint molding that was already on the wall.
Given an option, I would do the walls, then the floors, then paint the molding, then install it. (the molding can be done in parallel, since it's not installed yet)

thanks everyone! we met with a contractor on saturday morning and will be doing molding (except the very base piece), then floors, then paint walls.
