Homes-Suffolk
Hey girls. This is my first time posting on this board. Im from LIW and my husband and I got married in August. We are currently living in the apt in my parents' house to save for a house.
I'm a Nassau/Queens girl and my hubby is born and raised in Queens, but we are willing to branch out when we buy a home because we have limited funds and taxes and prices are too expensive for us in Nassau/Queens. So we are going to look upstate (Orange, Putnam and Duchess, and northern Westchester), and also try Suffolk.
I dont know much about Suffolk. What are some good areas, with good school districts? We also dont want to be too far out east since I teach in Queens, and he will prob work in Queens or the city. TIA!!!!!
I love this board. I read it all the time and now plan on being an active member :)

There are lots of great districts out there around Dix Hills, Northport area and they are very close to the nassau border. It seems you get more for your money on the South Shore and further East. Bayshore also has a good school district but you really have to pick your neighborhood...

Thanks. Where is Bayshore? I just looked on MLS and WOW some houses there are really cheap...less than 200,000  That makes me question that area. Would you mind FM or telling me on here some areas in Bayshore that are good? I'm really clueless with anything outside of nassau. Thank you

I would stay away from the homes that are in the brentwood school district so you probably want to stay south of sunrise or right around there. Brightwaters is a nice area of bayshore I believe they are a village - its a bit more west - hope that helps

I don't think Bay Shore usually ranks in the top 50% of Suffolk schools. There are some very very bad areas, but some nice areas like Brightwaters.
If you are commuting to Queens though(are you driving or taking the train?), I would stick to towns closer to Nassau (though they might be more pricey). I love where I live (Three Village Schools) but it takes about an hour and a half to visit my grandmother near Queens Center Mall (not during rush hour).

It depends on what you mean by "Top 50%." Some rankings use the number of kids who take AP courses. Some use Regents scores.
In my experience as a Long Island teacher, Newsday's site is the one your average Long Islander looks at when comparing school districts. Here are some lists for you:
The Global Regents exam is a good one to use as a gauge because pretty much all students take it (as opposed to, say the Physics Regents). Global Regents stats Bay Shore is ranked #83 out of 115 schools on the Island - Nassau and Suffolk. BUT. Notice that 86% of kids actually passed the exam. So they're in the bottom quartile of Long Island schools and the bottom half of Suffolk schools on most lists, but the passing rate is still pretty great. Long Island schools as a whole are so good, that even schools in the bottom half can offer a good education.
Here are some more good lists:
Dropout Rates
English, Grade 8 - Notice on this one how really highly touted districts, like West Islip and Babylon, are in the bottom half for all of L.I. Find a neighborhood you like, spend lots of time there, eat at the diners, shop at the Target, park your car on a Wednesday afternoon and walk around the neighborhood as the parents go to pick their kids up from the bus stops. You'll be able to tell pretty quickly if a neighborhood feels right for you or not. Just avoid the bottom 10 or 20 districts on those lists if you can afford to, and you'll be happy.

most of the houses for sale in "bay shore" are in north bay shore, which is in brentwood school district. if you see an address that's north of the southern state parkway, you know it's brentwood.
brightwaters is beautiful but very expensive. between the added village taxes and the home values, you're looking at the same price range as swankier districts on the north shore.

Brightwaters is nice.. but IMO not the best or most desirable area of Bay Shore. South Bay Shore (South of Montauk - near Lawrence and Garner, etc..) have GORGEOUS homes but stratospheric prices.
There is a pocket of Bay Shore where I grew up that is really beautiful - nice homes, great neighbors (still.. my sisters live there and many friends from when I was in school) and big properties. It's West Bay Shore - south of the railroad tracks and Union Blvd - West of Brightwaters/Southward Ho and bordered by West Islip on the east. It's not a huge area but it's really great. The homes are well maintained and there are a lot of young families that support each other.
As to the school district stats - I don't put a lot of stock in them to tell the complete story. They are numbers told in a void without context. Consider the fact that Bay Shore is a HUGE school district with the wealthiest of the wealthy and the poorest of the poor. There are a lot of kids who don't speak English as their native language and a lot of other socio-economic factors that can make it a little harder on the numbers. What I can tell you is that the teachers there are incredibly dedicated. A lot of them actually LIVE IN the district and have a vested interest in the success of the schools and the community. There are so many opportunities offered to the kids there - extra help is almost ALWAYS available - AP classes in just about every subject you can think of and almost every kind of club, organization and sport you could ever want.
I'll also throw in my usual vote for my current hometown of Sayville - good district, great families, beautiful community. It actually reminds me a lot of West Bay Shore!!
