I'm back and a Mommy!

Zachary David at 6:55 pm via c-section
10/09/10 and 9lbs 1 oz.
He is actually in the NICU because of low blood sugar and a positive result from a blood test for infection, so we'll be able to take him home on Saturday.
I went in for the induction on Friday night and they inserted the cervidil around 10:45pm and I was already contracting on my own about every 8 minutes. By 7:30am, I was contracting every 2-3 minutes and my doctor broke my water. I still was not feeling the contractions too much. At this point I was still only about 2cm dilated. The contractions were getting stronger and my doctor wanted to start pitocin to get them to be more productive since I was not progressing all that well. So he approved the epidural, they started the pitocin at 2 (which they max at 20!) and I was able to relax for a while and sleep.
The next time I was checked I was at 4cm, so they left me alone for a bit. But the epidural started to work only on my right side so I was feeling everything on my left. After a few different tricks, they decided to just re-do the epidural, which worked much better this time. My doctor came to check me again and I was only at 5cm, and the day was just dragging on - it was already 3pm. So they upped the pitocin and I tried to relax some more.
But I never got past 5cm. It was around 6pm and my doctor suggested the c-section because I was stalled at 5cm for 3 hours. He said normally when you hit a wall like that, labor is usually stalled and you should progress at least 1 cm/hour. So David and I talked it over and we decided to just do it. At this point I was so tired, so swollen with fluids (I mean my legs were like tree trunks!), and I just wanted it to be over. I had spiked a fever and I didn't want it to turn into an emergency c-section because I was afraid of a c-section to begin with - so I agreed to the section.
That's basically it. I had the section for failure to progress. While they were doing the section my doctor looked over the curtain and told me that my placenta was already deteriorating and hardened and I probably never would have been able to deliver Zach on my own - it was starting to block him from the birth canal so he was never able to come down.
I have to say, my doctor was amazing. I listed a bunch of fears I had about having a c-section, like having my arms tied down, and he agreed to try the section without strapping me down. And I did great - no flailing around. Overall, he really listened to me and allowed me to push for more time before starting pitocin and agreeing to the c-section.
The nursing staff at Mercy Medical Center was truly outstanding. They made me so comfortable, reassured my fears, and were there to hold my hand when I needed them.
My husband David (Songwriter76) was truly a rock, and I don't know how I would have made it through the whole thing without him. He has helped me so much this week as well as I recovered from the c-section.
