painting base moldings

is it a big pain in the arse?

are they wood or painted already?

If they are painted already then easy. If they are wood stained and have any sort of varnish on them you must sand, paint with and oil based primer and then paint them...

what shape are they in? Do they just ned a caulking & painting? If so, it's not so bad, time consuming but not bad.

If they are wrecked, I would start over.

Ours were the quarter round small moldings and they had carpet painted onto them, yuck - the old owners didn't move the carpet when they painted, they just painted the carpet onto the moldings... So we ripped them out and installed new ones. Definitely a big(ger) job, but well worth it to me. Since installing them 1-1/2 years ago, I have recaulked (the caulk shrinks as it dries so you sometimes need to go back) and repainted (touched up w/ another coat). But I love them. So easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth and they are so bright.

they are those white wooden ones - painted white and are in pretty good shape, but I figure if I'm painting one of my rooms, it can't hurt to touch 'em up a bit. I like things to look as perfect as possible.

I would paint the room. Then using a caulking gun, caulk to make a straight white line. Then once it dries, paint a new coat of semi-gloss white paint (i used BM decorators white).

eta: you would be surprised how much caulking helps create that 'clean' look that you are talking about. My husband makes fun of me because I bust out the gun every time I see a gap in a doorway or molding

I use Alex Plus Super White Caulk (sold at HD or Lowes)

warning: it's messy

I run the line, then use my finger to make it flush with the molding/wall, then use a slightly damp cloth (I keep a bucket of water near by) and wipe up any spilled caulk from the face of the molding, the wall, the floor, my hands, etc... I'm hardcore like that

Once you get the hang of it though, it's really easy. DH is a sloppy caulker and is not allowed near the gun.
